I had set out to photograph the last supermoon of the year against the

naked branches of a nearby dying tree. Unfortunately the town forester

had done his job, and these smallish seed stalks had to stand in for

the intended subject.

The stand-ins did their job.  I have often wondered why moon shot fanciers rarely take those setting shots.  I suppose they are night owls and sound asleep just before dawn.  ;)

Good morning Jake,

thanks for your kind words. From my own experience I think I can answer your question: it is much more fun to spend a nice afternoon outside, look for the perfect foreground, set up, have a picnic, take your shots and head for the bar. The moonset option involves getting out of bed at 4 AM, setting up in the dark, getting your pants soaked in the morning dew, realizing that your foreground didn't pan out, getting even more soaked wandering through hip-high grass and brush, taking the shots, and then heading off to work. I think I have seen many more full moons rising than setting. But then, both options get you out of the house and ain't so bad after all.

I think the proportions and details of the flower stalks work very well and create what I imagine to be a much more romantic looking image than a few gnarled branches would.

Your description of the conditions that are experienced attempting to shoot the setting moon are those which I share attempting to shoot the rising sun.  I wouldn't miss it for anything though : - )

Very well done Christoph!

Alf and Tony, thank you for your kind words. Yes, Alf, I agree, it's always fun to be outside, even when your wife asks you to change in the laundry room before she lets you back into the house. I was soaking wet and covered in sticky seeds.

One thing that I had hoped for was to get the moon and foreground (tree branches) both in focus - or at least show some detail in the moon. I attempted some focus stacking with similar shots taken that morning, but the results were not very satisfying.

So, this image is rather different from the one I had in mind, but I sure like it a lot.

Nice atmosphere with the low light and moon in the distance. The flowers make it romantic which is always a good thing! Nice work! Thank you for sharing. :)
