You know you're really making my life difficult with your posting all these wonderful Hummers! LOL!

My 100-400 won't do what your 500 will but I'm going to keep trying!

I did help my Mother fill and put out her HB feeders yesterday! But, . . . then we awoke to 35 degree temperatures this morning! So, it's probably still going to be awhile before we see any Hummers and the Garden gets to full bloom!

Great colors, background & details!

Cheers always,

Jim j.

LOL, thanks Jim! this was shot a while back, I just re-crop closer to show the details. There are 2 things going for this image, one is the fullframe sensor of the 5D II and second is the 500mm F4 lens.  The 100-400mm definitely won't be as good as the 500mm F4 but I think a body with like a 7D with more pixel would help some.

Just for giggles, I will post a similar one taken with the 1D Mark III + 100-400mm  and you can see it's the details is not as defined (1.3 cropped sensor + 10 meg pixel verse fullframe sensor + 21 mp)

If I crop the same as above for the 5D II + 500mm shot you can see how the details still ... so good

I know, . . . I know, . . . But the way it is, . . . anything more than the 100-400 is only in my dreams! Including a 7D! LOL!

I do wish the 100-400 handled as well on my 50D as it does on the ol' EOS-3 though! But, I definately wouldn't be shooting as many frames!

Cheers Tm,

Jim j.

Jim, at least you got 15 meg pix. My 1D III is only 10mp and the sensor is slight larger (1.3 verse 1.6) and I really don't want to crop much with my 1D III since it affect the final result quite a bit. That's why I use extender a lot  or try to craw closer to the bird. A moot point for these 2 shots (shown) since I was only 10 feet away  :-)

A wonderful image for me the best of the recent series of hummingbirds, the excellent equipment helps the good photographer, the enlarged image shows the sharpness and the beautiful colors of the plumage, ciao Giangiorgio

Very nice detail.  I wish I could get all my avian shots at iso 50 but hummers appear to be the most cooperative.  Very well done.

Thanks David! The only time I can use ISO 50 is when I shoot with multiple flashes (like this). The 3,4 flashes are no more than 1 feet away from the bird and that result in F22 to F32 even at ISO 50 .
