On the previous shot of this scene, the sun was hidden behind the

double steeples with only the lit sky putting the church in

silhouette. Is exposing the sun a good idea?Thank you for your

That's the short answer. The problem is the church looks underexposed. I do appreciate exposing it correctly would have made the sun blow out the rest of the image.

I think it's a great idea, especially when the clouds are so thick as in your case. I agree, I would lighten the foreground a bit, leaving the trees dark. My version took two minutes to complete, and I think when using a Raw file it would look even better.

In any case, I like the composition and the golden colors in the sky.

Personally I like the version you posted, maybe room for a small amount of selective lightening, but otherwise I would leave as it is.

Sky looks fantastic!

I don't like sunsets. But this time I will make an exception. You have caught a beautiful moment and handled it well.

Thank you for the bang on observation;I touched this up focusing on maintaining some definition on the veiled sun.

Thank you for looking at this and for your suggestion.I touched it up some, lightened the ground a bit and even if I don't work from RAW,I obviously don't have your skills as it took me a little more time.I chose to leave the church somewhat darker to keep the focus on the sun,but that is a matter of taste as your version diverts some of the attention on the church. In either case, your attention makes me feel good about this image.

Hi Laurant,

yes, my version was simply a suggestion. You are the one whose been there and took the shot, so you know what it should look like. BTW. I don't think your skills are all that bad - you made entire forests disappear :-)

Man, I really love that sky!

Strange isn't it: I was not particularly attracted by sunrises/sunsets and there were some pretty impressive ones during my stints in Africa and Asia, but since moving here on retirement, these plus ice/snow and anything related to coastal fishing activities have become my new focus.......that or park the camera I guess.Anyway,I appreciate you looking at this one and thank you for the kind exception.

I guess it all comes down to how we best use the tools and skills we have on a spectacle that nature pops on us.Again, thanks for the very appreciated attention to this one.
