I keep looking at trees at this time of year and think of taking something similar. In a way I am glad that I didn't because I know I wouldn't have got anything as good as this. Yes! I like it.

Thank you everyone for your comments, they're much appreciated.

Jim, I assume the darker areas you are referring to is the vignetting? I added the vignetting in post-processing but now I think you are right. It would be better off without it!

I like the curved sweep of the trunk which just leads the eye up into a sort of starburst at the branches. The vignette doesn't really bother me

It's dazzling, detailed, and well composed. The stark contrast between dark tree trunk and lighter and brighter colors is a strong statement. It overwhelms me a little, but that gets my attention and gives me pause, not necessarily in a negative way.

Because of the patches of moss on the tree trunk, my first reaction would be to lighten the trunk to bring out this moss pattern a bit more, and also to make it appear closer to what the eye would see.  Yet Fred's comment makes me see this in a whole new light (pun fully intended), and I can see his point of view.  This is what I get out of PN, and I appreciate it greatly.

Great POV. Interestingly (and coincidentally, I'm sure) if you did lighten the tree trunk, you'd see an eye and two thick lips very clearly. Not at all what you'd want for this shot. Perfect as is. Congratulations on Photo of the Day.

Cheers ~
