there does seem to be a difference with this lens. Even though there is still a little not perfectly sharp, except for the drops below the bill, there seems to be more definition than with the 100-400. Maybe a little higher f-stop may have given you more of the bird in focus. Still, all this pelican series is amazing -  tfs!

Thanks Greg & Verena for the thorough analysis! Oviously this lens is better but with the 1.4x TC on it would be a bit ... less stellar :-) -  The last shot with the 100-400mm was shot with the 5D Mark II  ( this shot : http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17603154&size=lg) and it would make a lot of different because the fullframe 5D II dynamic range is a notch above the 1D Mark III for sure. Aside from that, the other shot was taken in much better light.

 

I like the sharpen image you had done but I am not familiar with that 'software' ?
