I dont know if it is intentional but the high aperture of f22 gives a fuzzy feel to this image which I like. I have seen other images where you also use f22, where this fuzzy feel was less appealing.

For your lens I would also try to get some distance from the flower, increase a bit the focal length, and shoot at f4. If you are worried about depth of focus, you can find some apps to calculate this for every camera, lens, focal length, focus distance, and aperture.

Taking the arrangements of my wife I also used higher apertures, until I found out I lost a lot of detail doing that. Just a thought.

Like I said in this image I really love the fuzzy feeling.

Well Done,

Ben

Beautiful. In case you have to matte and frame this image, it might be advisable to leave some more space where the top of the flower meets the edge. Well done.

Hi Ben.

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice. Glad you liked the fuzziness- although it was unintentional :)

The f 22 is actually a larger setting than I usually use,but can get away with it when I step back a bit from the bloom. As I'm sure you've noticed, many of my other shots at f32 are quite detailed. In this case, the red is what gave me problems. It is quite intense and in order to get the color right, I wasn't able to sharpen as much as usual.  With your lovely arrangements it is quite useful to use wider apertures since you are so far away from them. If you were to use f 4, for instance, just a few inches from the flower, very little would be in focus. If you back up far enough to get the whole bloom in focus at f 4, you (or anyone) would have to crop so much to get back in close that much definition would be lost. I've tried this over and over. In order to get any dof in a close-up of something as multi-dimensional as a flower i have found that one has to use higher f number, which does produce a less sharp original image. However, there are enough pixels there to allow for considerable pp sharpening, so, the best of both worlds!

Cheers to you and Ilse!
