There seems to be an implied relationship between the foreground object and its cousins that are leaving, fading away in the distant fog. One gets a sense of sad utter loneliness from its perspective. The tree adds a witness to the scene and accentuates the distance and scale.

Very well done!

Best Regards

Many thanks for your comments - much appreciated :-)

This was a dull winter's day which basically didn't really invite to go out - but it offered this atmosphere when fog isolates objects and everything in the distance fades away into a white void.

Wolfgang,

Your work is actually ZEN (zuschauen, entspannen, nachdenken) to the point with an immaculate composition and a beautiful black and white. It is indeed a silent, foggy winters day. Contemplation is the word I think.

Kind regards,

Herman

I, too, see this as contemplative. It's the sharpness against the fog that seems so palpable to me, a study in contrasts yet subtly so. This photo, and your photos in general, never screams at the viewer but it provides a kind of soothing yin and yang. The delicacy of the whole, and in particular the background, is so inviting. The play of sharpness and line of the foreground figure and the bit of jutting land is so effective with the signature tree almost beckoning to the viewer to come explore the depth of the photo. This is textured and layered and asks for a few moments of repose and meditation from the viewer, happily given.

This photo made me immediately think of the quote attributed to Einstein: "everything should be as simple as possible, but not simpler".

If this photo contained less elements, it would probably become too simple. As it is now, of a lovely tranquility, balanced just right, deceivingly simple (as it's not all that easy to make a photo as simple as this, in my limited experience).
I sense longing, a dash of loneliness without a whining negative tone. Being different, firm and unique, with only some others far away off in the hazy distances. A nice balance between those two....

Deceivingly simple, but fortunately not too simple.

The atmosphere you've captured is remarkable. Previous comments offer many impressions. Art is not easily defined.  Nice work.  ~~~~~L
