Beautiful Milky Way was just above Moeraki Boulders, while the

backdrop city light reminded me that I was not far from the

civilization. Thanks for viewing this image.

Stunning image! What were your exposure settings for getting such a great image of the sky, if you don't mind revealing your secrets.

Yan, I am so blown away by this and other such "astral" images in part because I fail so miserably in my attempts.  Balancing the light in this scene is difficult, so any insight you could give us admirers of your work would be appreciated.  Well composed, well exposed and well created, Yan.

I share the expression of others in making this shot. Technically difficult but the final result is one to behold. Beautiful composition and title. Congratulations, 7/7.

Dear all, thanks for your comments on this image. This image was a result from two successive shots: one for the sky and one for the foreground boulder, with the same position. I use my new Nikon D800E withe lens 14-24mm f/2.8:

For the sky: ISO 2500, f/2.8, shuttle speed 30 seconds, focal length 14 mm;

For the foreground: ISO 1600, f/2.8, manual focus on the boulder, shuttle speed 240 seconds, focal length 14 mm,

Then careful blending these two shots together in Photoshop.

Cheers, Yan

This is great! Thanks for the technical information. Just one suggestion: I would cut half of the empty bottom. Karl

Yan,  Having been to Moeracki Boulders, this blows me away - magnificent image.  You are so fortunate to have caught this magical time of day and all these stars.  WOW.  Did you drive there from Dunedin?  Congratulations to you on this winer.   Best to you. Larry

Dear Larry,

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I drove there from Dunedin, and stayed in a nearby motel for 3 days in order to get good weather around Moeraki Boulders.

Cheers, Yan
