This is another capture of the Firefly (previous image). The Firefly

was closer to the 'Spoon' end of the spoon rather than at the end of

the handle (other shot). My focus in this one is not quite as good. I

was fascinated to see that the Firefly had it's head pressed against

the handle of the spoon, as if it was looking at it's reflection. I was

surprised to see the 'etching marks' in the Stainless on the edge of

the handle. I had to use the Flash in this image as well as the lighting

was very poor. This Summer I will try to learn to get a proper

exposure without using my Flash. (Any visits and comments are

welcome, sincere regards, Gail {Macro} )

Perfect choice of DOF! I like the reserved subdued colours and what you did with flash. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Gail,

A fine capture of this little fly.

Using F/6.3 at close range did not cause a lot of loss in definition, but using F/2.8 would have provided improved contrast and definition without any loss in the key aspects of the subject. A slight manual focus change would have allowed this to work out well.

As for the flash , you could have reduced the power or placed a diffusing material over the front. Changing your working distance further away from the subject woud have worked , too.

Warmest Regards, Mike

Thank you for those words of advice Mike. Truly, because of the Thunderstorm, I did not think quickly at all, was just trying to get an image as quick as I could, and very frustrated doing even that. Now that I have a 430 EX 11 Flash, hopefully I will get better results when I need a flash so I don't ever use the onboard again. I appreciate your time taken to further help me with this image. I knew from the start this one did not have nearly as good focus, but thought it would be interesting for others to see.

Sincere regards, Gail

Get really good shot of those small bugs not easy task. It take time and patients. You did it well!

Good suggestions from Mike as to the use of the flash. Maybe a setting as he suggested Aperture F2.8 and in conjunction with a higher ISO might get the results you are seeking without the flash.  Its all  about experimentation and what works best for you.

I quite like your analogy of this one, he is looking in the concave mirror thinking, " I seem to have put on weight" it made me smile!

Best Regards

Thanks so much for your visit Alf. Because this was taken last year and in a hurry, I was not thinking. I now have a Canon 480 EX 11 Flash that should help in these situations I hope. I liked your little 'conversation' this little guy was having.

Thankyou both for the encouragement. This guy sure was small, and handholding proved challenging. Actually, I left the Lens Hood on which is quite large, and used it to steady myself by propping it on the Table I was sitting at. If Abbey hadn't been trying to eat this 'beetle' looking thing, I would have never seen it on the 'outdoor' carpet that is on the deck.

Sincere thanks, Gail

By now you must have seen my note that I have been very worried about you!!!! You have been a long time since visiting and I was concerned something was 'wrong'. So glad to hear from you, and to know you keep 'tabs' on me.

Often on my mind, Gail ;-)
