I was attracted to shapes formed by the shadows on this Rio off the Grand

Canal in Venice, Italy. The scene was in the shade and there was so

much going on I felt my eyes jumping from one thing to another. I

processed to bring more light and color to the scene but didn’t succeed

much in making the image less busy. Comments and critique welcome.

Wayne,

Wow....beautiful image with wonderful shadows, reflection, colors & details.  This one is a classic.  Thanks for sharing.  Take care, Patsy

Very nice. It's pretty, well composed, and interesting. There is an issue that catches my eye though. Your processing(?) has left lighter patches on the faces of the buildings on the right. I think it would look better if those areas were more uniform in color and brightness.

Thanks Patsy, Chuck and Pierre.  Chuck, I was not sure how much the light patches to the right were a distraction or what brought me to the image in the first place.  They are the result of the strong light and shadows that were naturally there.

I like the composition... I like how the canal curves, it makes my eye follow and my simple mind wonders what is around the curve. The post work is different and adds to the image, as Tony said "eye candy". Very nice work Wayne.

Wayne, thanks for your comments/rating on my recent critique request. In reviewing your portfolio, this image captured my attention. One, because I was in Venice a couple of months ago and was curious to see another photographer's experience of it, 2) because I love the composition, lighting, shows, reflections in this image. There's also an interesting sense of isolation captured here that might convey the sometimes lonely life of the gondolier. I'm not sure what sort of digital technique you've used but I wonder what the image would look like without the painterly effect that appears (particularly in the water), though perhaps it is natural. Either way, a pleasing image -- nice work.

Thanks, Stephen.  I too am interested in learning from how others have imaged Venice.  Look forward to seeing your images of the city.  Well observed, I allowed the water to maintain more of the "painterly effect".  Not sure about that decision now.

Great art! Your composition is excellent and the "painterly" effect mentioned above gives this image its originality. Well seen and done!

Best regards,

Alain
