Halloween on a Hill

LenMarriott

Canon A540, 1\1000 @ f4, 5.8mm (35mm FF equiv). The farm is dressed up yearly for the kiddies in Halloween decor and these cutouts on the hill are a part of the decorations. Conversion to B&W and some other hanky panky in Photoshop provided the result you see here. Best, LM.

The foreground 'bushes' is actually a row of corn.  This unremarkable shot needed some 'spice' so I converted to B&W & added some dark tone to the sky area.  Perhaps not a prize winner but worth the effort I took to record it, to me at least.  :-)  Best, LM.

I took notice of the cat first.  Third in from the right looks like a guy holding  a chain saw over his head!  Eek!  I like the witch too.

I'm so behind it will look like I'm ahead with my b x w shots.  I just mailed out exposed Ilford film with shots taken from LAST winter.  LOL

Happy Thanksgiving!

Good of you to come out of hibernation to comment on this one.  :-) Looking forward to seeing some of your B&W offerings.  One other difference I've noticed about B&W is that I don't seem to get the same chemical stains on the negs the way I do sometimes (most times?) with colour negs.  Perhaps it's because the last bath for B&W negs is usually water & not something which could leave a stain. My B&W negs usually come back pretty clean.  Hmmm,  I think I'll post that question on the 'film & processing' forum.   Thanks for your observations on this one.  Best, LM.

Funny and nice little figurines/ images.It is a bit bizarre on the top of the  field... but very original in B/W. Looks very theatrical show....;-))

Inspired by your 'The Muted Band' silhouette shot.  I was thinking of yours when I spotted this scene.  Thanks for your thoughts.  Best, LM.

Len, your images are like buses, you don't see one coming for a while then they arrive all at once : - )

I really like the dark gradation you have added to the top of the image, it kind of sets the stage nicely for the errrm exibits. It's one of those images that makes you smile as you recognise the various characters and I think it's one that will connect with a whole lot of people because of this. It's a great idea whoever thought of it, and I think you did justice with your photo, the composition and presentation are spot on!

Best Regards

Any manipulation should improve the shot.  I felt there was too much light sky area so I darkened the top.  Kind of matches the tone of the bottom now and aids in keeping attention on the silhouettes in my humble opinion.  Fun shot.  Best, LM.

Almost missed you there.  Not paying enough attention I guess.  I like your 'bus' analogy.  Ain't it the truth.  Happens mostly during inclement weather I've noticed.  This is part of a  display put on yearly by a local farmer on the edge of town.  There are petting zoos for the kids, mazes made out of hay bales, etc.  A nice way to end the summer.  Thanks for your visit.  Best, LM.

Original in shapes and colors, yes in colors because there are no other pictures of Halloween in B&W! I didn't even understand that it's a Halloween picture until I saw the witch which  means I followed the figures from the right to the left, which again may mean that the flipping horizontally could make a story and will be by the rules of composition (from the left to the right)! It makes a kind of a life story for me! Obviously it wasn't your intention! Good picture nevertheless!

Or, I could have taken it from the other side of the hill.  :-) I guess the people who installed these figures weren't thinking about how the eye moves from left to right.  I think I would have had the Zombie on the right placed a bit closer to the cemetery on the left.   Thanks for your views.  Best, LM.

This works very nicely in B&W indeed... I like the way you composed this with the Halloween silhouettes on the hill and the textures of the corn field below.(not too intrusive, and  enough to add texture & further interest)  Best, Marjolein

This is the spookiest I could make this scene, shot at mid day on a clear sky sunny day.  I doubt I'd get the same effect from a colour version.  Thanks for taking the time.  Best, LM.

I was not thinking halloween but rather keeping the crows away and in this case thinking as a joke;  that's really what you call "scare" the crow. Then I read the title.

Come to think of it I didn't see any crows.  Must have been effective!  :-)  Sometimes a few, if not a thousand, words help to establish context.  Thanks for your most welcome visit.  Best, LM.

".....don't need the dead space..........."   Hahaha, hilarious!  Don't you think that 'dead' space is appropriate for this Halloween theme?  Puns aside, I think your observation has merit.  The shot would be more balanced with the crop you suggest.  Thanks for taking the time.  You should post a few photos yourself so I can return the favour.  Don't be shy & don't be a stranger.  Best, LM.
