A shot looking south to the Napali Coast. I had seen this rock in

numerous photos online, and now see the magical quality a lone rock

can add in terms of interest. I think my exposure was about ninety

seconds. Let me know what you think, good or bad. This is how I

learn and grow as a photographer.

Hello Paul,

Very nice image, the rays of the sun, the rock, and the layers of mountains make this a strong picture.

I see you used a 3stop gray filter, but I wonder why only f16, why not choose a higher one f22 ...  It might have blurred the water in the from a bit more.

Well Done,

Ben

HI Ben.  I totally understand where you are coming from when mentioning the aperture I used.  I guess I worry about diffraction in my images, and tend to stop down to f16 with good results.  Shooting at f22 would have increased the exposure, but how much flatter is the water going to get?  Good points, and well taken, Ben.  You know how much I appreciate your input into my images.  Take care, and all the best my friend.

I think you have the exposure spot on, the detail in the mid point landmass is good whilst the smooth water and movement in the clouds allows that ethereal atmosphere that is so becoming. i might have composed the shot with the foreground rock slightly more off centre, but thats hardly a criticism, more of a personal taste thing.

Sincere Compliments

Hi Alf.  I thought about that part of the composition as well, but opted to keep the rock where it is.  Part of my decision laid in the trying to set up suggested diagnols with the darker clouds and the coastline, as well as with the rock and the small suggestion of another rock breaking the water's surface on the right of the image.  I also thought about how the edge of the closest coastline (dark area) lead your eye to the rock.  You are right, though, in that everyone sees things slightly different.  That is what makes for good conversations!  Thanks for stopping by and commenting on this image, Alf.
