Nice composition, Marc. The reflection on the water is a nice addition.

I often photograph gulls at the beach and find the color palate a real challenge. All the grays and browns tend to make for some monotony. In my experience, tack sharp focus on the white heads and beak areas can help. Here, your focus seems to be on some grass beneath the head of the bird on the left. The focus on the birds is a bit soft overall. If you post-process, you might selectively sharpen the birds' heads to make them "pop" a bit more.

Hi Marc, I agree with Alberta Re: Focus. Do a majority of your shots taken with this lens/camera combo exhibit this characteristic of the subject (or intended point of focus)being soft with the area just in front of the subject being sharper? If so, I'd suggest looking into testing the combo for a condition known as front focus.

Another suggestion-your shot appears to be slightly under -exposed. This is possibly a result of the white portion of the birds tricking the camera's meter. There are several ways to compensate for these conditions, depending on your preference and camera functionality. Again, something to look into if this happens often. Keep shootin!
