alfbailey 3 Posted September 13, 2010 As the wind dropped to almost zero, the sailboats returned to the dock, but the only means of getting the boat to move was rocking it from side to side, sometimes at an alarming angle. The guys walked up the jetty voicing thier discontent to each other about the lack of wind, my brief interjection of "Look on the bright lads, side It made a lovely picture" didn't seem to be any consolation at all. : - ) I will be away a few days, your thoughts and comments are always apprciated. Catch up with you all when I get back! Link to comment

swede621 0 Posted September 20, 2010 This is going in my favorites. What all the other contributors have remarked is true regarding the excellent color and clarity etc. I share their thought. IMO the most remarkable aspect of this shot is the incredible angles that you have captured with the sails, horizon and reflection.Outstanding !! Link to comment
ldavidson 4 Posted September 22, 2010 Hi Alf! This is a very peaceful, calming scene. The sailboat silently moving through the gentle waves is idyllic. I love the soft ripples in the water. The colours are beautiful, the composition is perfect. I could look at this for a long time. Warm wishes, Linda Link to comment
alfbailey 3 Posted September 22, 2010 MICHAELMany thanks for your interest and kind words. I'm really pleased you liked this series. I took about 80 photo's on this particular evening, the hard part was choosing which ones to process and post, because I liked the majority of the shots I took. But easier than trying to find a single shot I do like, when things don't turn out as planned.Cheers MichaelAlfANNESincere thanks for your visit and comments. I don't suppose calm waters and sailing go hand in hand really, as wind is required to power the boat, but it does make for a more aesthetically pleasing image when the reflections can be seen clearly.Kind RegardsAlfRUUDMany thanks for your visit and kind wordsCheersAlfPATSYMany thanks for your thoughts, very much appreciated!Kind RegardsAlfBOBBYThank you, I really appreeciate your visit, much appreciatedRegardsAlfGAILSincere thanks for your interest and thoughts regarding this and other images. The thing I love about this set of images, that you will understand knowing the location, is that unless informed otherwise it could be mistaken for some sub tropical exotic location.Cheers John!AlfFALAK Sincere Thanks for your visit and feedback, much appreciated.Kind RegardsAlfKALLOLMany thanks for your visit and kind words. I am really pleased you enjoyed viewing it.Best RegardsAlfRAJINDER Thank you for your comments, much appreciated.Kind RegardsAlfJERRYSincere thanks for your thoughts and feedback, very much appreciated. I agree the angle of the sails, is what I was trying to capture, but because of the relatively low light conditions, I had to open the aperture to ensure the shot wasn't blurred. The craft usually depends on wind for propulsion, however on this particular evening the wind had dropped to almost zero, and the lone sailor, had to sway the yacht back and forth at extreme angles to make headway, and so I was pleased it turned ok, and I'm equally pleased and honoured you would consider it a favourite. Thank you.Best RegardsAlfLINDAMany thanks for your thoughts and invaluable feedback, it is good and very useful to know what feelings and emotions an image can generate, and also very gratifying to know when it's hit the spot it was intended to.Cheers LindaAlf Link to comment

papasan 0 Posted September 23, 2010 sail-ing [sey-ling] - noun 1. The art of getting wet, and spending a great deal of money while slowly going nowhere...Sorry couldn't resist this one. But it is a great shot. I love the deep saturated colors, the blue and the orange complementing each other perfectly. Your composition is excellent the near central horizon gives a feeling of stillness to the shot (which is what was happening). The lines made by the mast /sail and their reflection intersecting the horizon and the bridge is a strong visual element that keep the eye wondering around that boat. Well done indeed - michel Link to comment
blue-olympus 0 Posted September 23, 2010 Your an expert at this type of shot. with the colours truly outstanding. The boat must have really made your day...Regards Link to comment
elportebonheur 0 Posted September 23, 2010 An African proverb says: 'Bad luck for one man is good luck for another'...You are the lucky one capturing those 'unfortunate sailors' in the hours before sunset when the wind drops. The dinghy is definitely the point of interest in this photograph and amplifies the visual appeal tremendously. In summary, a picture with great impact - colors, light and all other technical aspects included. Chapeau Alf! Link to comment

trisha jean-angela 5 Posted September 23, 2010 So beautiful and serene; this should be huge and hung on the wall in a place where you can just sit back and kick up your heels when you need to unwind. Wonderful capture! Another one of yours for my faves! Thank you for sharing. :) Link to comment
alfbailey 3 Posted September 23, 2010 LINDASincere thanks for your visit and feedback, silhouettes are something that I really love to capture, but rarely get the oppotunity.Kind RegardsAlfHARRY Many thanks for your visit and feedback, much appreciated! I agree the human element does bring a broader appeal to an image, I guess I got very lucky on this particular evening to capture the different aspects as they presented themselves.Cheers HarryAlfMICHELI think a lot of Sailors would agree with your analogy, and appreciate the humour as I do. : - ) I am glad you mentioned "The near central horizon" as it was something that I played with for some time, as it is I have already cropped a bit of sky, and could have cropped more to comply with the "thirds" rule. But in all honesty it just didn't look right, and it lost some of the natural brokeh, so I settled for a compromise. Sincere thanks for your feedback and kind words Michel, much appreciated!Kind RegardsAlfKEITHYou are quite right, the boat really did make my day, there were in fact two boats and I waited around by the jetty for them to return, my luck got even better as the wind dropped completely. Many thanks for your kind words and feedback Keith.Best RegardsAlfELMany thanks for your positive feedback, much appreciated. The African proverb is a good analogy of that particular evening, although even the sailors didn't lose out in the long term, as I promised to send them photo's of the yachts for thier website.Cheers ELAlfRAYMONDSincere thanks for your visit and kind comments, much appreciated!Best RegardsAlfTRISHAYou are very kind, and I really appreciate your comments. it is truly gratifying to know that my photo can inspire such feelings, and I'm honoured that you would consider it a favourite.
