Interesting composition!

Early morning light after rain (the canoe needs a lot of bailing). Not sure if it evokes

peace and nostalgia, but that was its aim. Thanks for your critiques.

Arthur, Beautiful composition with nice light and color. I like the wooden chair, it somehow doesn't fit the place, but makes it more interesting because of that. It also adds a nice counterpoint to the angle of the pier and canoe. 

Very nice Arthur, lovely warm light and mood, personally I would have made it a bit bigger.

Thank you all for your comments. It was early morning light, at the same place and chair prop of another image "Awaiting Spring", in B&W, made some months earlier (in 2007 I think).  I am finding that reduced colour range helps my photos and the fact the chair is similar in tone to the wharf under this lighting reinforces that a bit. The chair is a bit incongruous, i guess, but incongruity can add a bit oif mystery to an image, I think, although perhaps only slightly here. I really love early morning and late evening light for both B&W and colour photos. Simon, I had not reduced the pixel density enough to have a slightly larger image (which would have exceeded the 500 pixels wide, but I will keep that in mind in future. I guess we can go to 6 or 7 inches in width.

Arthur that even light is the holy grail it saves a lot of post processing work and produces a great overall natural tone, I like the chair it's inviting I only wish I was sitting on it, looks like a beautiful spot, very serene. By the way I go to 700 pixels and sometimes bigger if it fits.

Thanks, Simon. Fresh water lakes abound in eastern Canada, something like 250,000 in each of Ontario and Quebec, post glacial if I am not mistaken. This one, where we rented a lakeside house of a Snowbird (Canadians that move to Florida for the winter) is not far from Lakefield, closer to the cities and the village where the British prince (Andrew) went to school for a year. Working there as a contractual for a few months each year allowed us to canoe before supper each evening and to wake up in the morning to the tranquil scene. I will try 700 pixels in future. Nice to do pleasurable things without needing a fortune. The old chair (one of my props that I throw in the truck) is from rural Quebec and the people were really that short not so long ago.

Lovely photo. If evoking peace or a sense of nostalgia was indeed your aim, then you have succeeded with me! I love the early morning light; I don't see it that often since I am a bit of a sleepy head in the morning, but when I've been at my parents lake house I like to go out on the dock and enjoy it with a cup of coffee...it is so peaceful there. Lovely photo! Thank you for sharing. :)

Thanks for looking, Trisha. I envy you your country place. This one we rented while I was on contract, and was indeed hard to say goodbye to (at least we got out in the canoe on several evenings - after bailing it!). Perhaps getting up early is not always necessary, as we can sometimes have similar lighting before dusk. There is something about the tone of that light that is peaceful, and all I needed to do was place my antique chair prop on the wharf to relate the peace a bit more to the implied human presence.
