Dear Alf,

Both views of this image are excellent. This one felt better to me for unknown reasons, maybe the edge of the shoreline is more natural in a vertical format, I don't know. I do know its a beautiful image as always.

Best Regards,

Holger

Excellent, this has much more depth than the landscape version and the processing is spot on as well. Lovely sharpness and detail throughout.

very well done.

it is very hard to decide which version is better. the difference in level is so small that probably it is a subjective decision. i like better the foreground colors here, rather than the bluish tint of the other one. this has better depth, as it was said already. but on the horizontal version come out better this similarity between the water flow and cloud formation. i would vote on this one by a little margin. both images are very good. best regards.

I prefer this version as well,it has this wonderfull depth, the eye travels comfortably without any disruption from left or right, from the position of the shot i can see that you were standing in water, that's dedication and hard work to capture the best shot,Excellent work, regards,Harry

Dear Alf! I also prefer portrait version, so you can show F/G elements sharper with vivid colors and imparting more depth to scene, specially when shadows predominate at picture. My best wishes.

Hamid.

HOLGER

Many thanks for your thoughts and views on this, I really do appreciate you taking time to comment. Personal preference is good enough reason to choose, but it's not always easy to justify choices even to ourselves.

Thanks again Holger

Warm Regards

DAVID

Sincere thanks for looking in and making your thoughts known. I agree with your comment about the greater depth, but somehow I'm drawn to the landscape view, I think it's the greater sense of space that appeals to me. I appreciate the feedback David.

Cheers

Alf

ZSOLT

Many thanks for looking in and sharing your thoughts. I tend to agree with you, it is quite a close call and most likely a subjective choice for most people. But it is good to know how people view things. On reflection I should have posted both images at the same time so that they had  more equal viewing time. Thanks again Zsolt, Much appreciated!

Kind Regards

Alf

HARRY

Thank you for stopping by. You are spot on Harry, I walked back up the beach with one squelchy trainer, but you know what it's like, the urge to get a better shot always overcomes any trepidation about getting wet feet, or knees or anything else for that matter, with the exception of the precious camera of course. Thanks for sharing your views Harry , much appreciated!

Kind Regards

Alf

HAMID

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. You make a very valid point about the shadows, which I must confess I did not consider, I must admit the responses I have received so far from all of the above are forcing me to re-think my original preference. Thanks again Hamid!

Hi Alf!

I'm voting for the portrait as well, but I agree with other posters -- it is close.   Because of the disturbed sandy gullies, this feels tranquil rather than peaceful like so many other sunrise/sunset pics.   The path would be difficult, but it's out there.

Hi Alf

This vertical (portrait) crop has a completely different feel to it than the horizontal one.  On the negative side the symmetry between the cloud line and the water is not as obvious.  On the positive side, your perspective in this shot emphasizes the foreground patterns in the sand giving the image a deeper sense of space.  I think both images have their own merit and can stand on their own. Both are excellent shots.  Regards - michel

While I think both are excellent, I do find this one gets the edge for me. I find the increased detail in the foreground sand adds a lot, and the composition helps emphasize the excellent light, and unusual clouds. Superb bit of photography my friend!

All the best,
Neil

I think this version just about edges the landscape version but perhaps it's because this image is larger on the screen and therefore I can see more detail particularly in the foreground. Very nicely framed and produced.

JOHN

You have raised an interesting question there John, that maybe someone can answer. "Why do portrait shots appear that much larger than the landscape counterparts on PN"? Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one John. Very much appreciated!.

Cheers mate!

This is a masterful representation of drama in reality. The dramatic light-and-color effect is marvelous. From the foreground to the backdrop - it’s a visual pleasure. The horizontal version is depicting the beauty in vastness. In the vertical composition the foreground is truly amazing. It has enhanced the attention value of the image. Best regards.
