pnital 36 Posted July 3, 2010 It is the second largest synagogue in Europe,Its architecture is a melange of a moorish style with bizantin ellements. In any event it is very beautiful. It was built in 1893 and stoped fuctioning in the 3o's and was reparated in 1934-36. By a chance we arrived at a time of a new bible entering the temple, and a elebration took place there,...and we became a part of it. this is an inside part of the temple .Thanks for viewing. Donna Stavis 0 Posted July 4, 2010 A wealth of details of ornate, opulent designs. I'd love to know the influence of the ridges on the inside of the white arches and why a chanukiah, instead of a menorah, is lit. I read this synagogue housed a hospital during various wars. Quite beautiful house for coming together to read a scroll of laws. I particularly love the "feel" of the white material. Link to comment
bosshogg 4 Posted July 4, 2010 Hello,In response to a comment on one of my images, yes, I'm fine and on the road again. Will be heading from Iowa toward Canada in about a week and from there south into eastern Washington state. As you know, I disparage all that churches represent, but I am still able to appreciate their sublime beauty. And this surely is a beauty. The fine color palette and many details are very nice. As always, my best. Link to comment

pnital 36 Posted July 5, 2010 Radu, thanks, I think that Art is developed by layers, and artists are creating learning of the past and creating in the present with the needed changes of time. Keith, Thanks as well. Donna, it was really unusual to come to the synagogue and see the ceremony. I'm a secular human being, and still seeing the tradition as it was carried there, was very interesting. David, I agree with you about religion, but I looked at the artistic side of the building and the ceremony on another part and way of living.I wish you a safe travel! Pierre, thanks again.
