Another outstanding shot, Birte...I think these Malaysian orangutans are protected under endangered species in Borneo.

Yes they are protected, but the protection is not working.Unfortunately the habitat the Orangutans live in is also the the one the logging companies both legal and illegal and the palm oil industry prefer. The size of three football fields is cleared every hour of the orangutans habitat. Then there is the selling of so called human skulls to tourists ,they are in fact skulls of the orangutans sold on the pretense of being headhunters trophies. We are loosing some 1000 a year and the latest numbers are about 8-10 thousand left in the wild.

You have composed it very well. Nice framing of the arching limb and its own arm. Your focus is sharp and the colors are very good. Well done. Regards ifti

Great shot Birte. The branch adds a natural frame. Wish you would give a little more detail regarding their pending extinction. Take care.-Jim

p.s.- Didn't see the comment above-Thanks.

Hi Birte,

Your photographic work is as always flawless, just wonderful to look at. But it saddens everyone to think these amazing animals might not be with us much longer. Thank you for trying to bring it to everyones attention. Take care.

Wonderful and so cute image (model). What can we do about it Birte, every "measure" against global warming for instance was (if it was) taken already too late! It seems to me that we are predestined to destroy the earth and then build it again, stupid thought, but anything better I can't think of right now! There are people being payed for the care of these poor animals and I myself would never hunt them or pretend to have been doing it, it's so primitive and stupid. Why can't people just "hunt" them with their cameras and camcorders?!

Firstly congratulations on another brilliant image, your eye for detail is amazing, and the clarity of the shot makes it almost 3D.

As for the plight of these poor creatures, words fail me, but I think Pierre has summed up mankinds blindness and stupidity quite well. The figures you have quoted for the decline of the habitat and species, are quite frankly very frightening, and I dread to think of the type of earth we are leaving to our children and grandchildren.

I made a decision last week to refrain from posting my images for rating, and rating others photo's due to losing a good friend and very talented photographer from the site, (due for the most part to the abuse of the anonymous rating system). Having said all of that, if a rating will help this image be viewed more widely and so make more people aware of the situation, then consider it done 7/7

Kind Regards

Alf

Great work as usual Birte.  Your commitment and dedication to these causes is commendable.  Your putting your talent as a photographer to promote it is admirable.  This is a great image showing the near humanness of these beautiful animals.  It is sad that in the future all we may see of them would be images.

Alf, here is a quote i read somewhere which has turned the whole issue on it's head for me:  "we are not leaving this earth to our children we are borrowing it from them"...  food for thoughts.

Beautiful photograph Brite.  Odd, they are not the most beautiful animals, but as 'toddlers' they have such cute faces, and seem beautiful to me...just as our own children look to us when they are born. You captured wonderful detail in this shot and the expression in this young one's eyes appears to be adoration for it's mother.

As for their future, I am beginning to believe that 'our' future will soon border on the same.  As individuals we must know that we are responsible for our thoughts, words, and actions.  We have a world that is transforming into 'moral adolescent's at an alarming rate.  The size of our brains's seem to have no bearing on mature and intelligent decisions.  If we truly knew all the horrors that are taking place each and every minute of every day, the weight would be unbearable.  Mankind is and always will be his own worst enemy.....something to do with 'free will' if I reacall.  One thing I find refreshing is the animals that stay 'monogamous' and treat their yourng with an inbred love.  Us humans need to take a lesson from them.  We are authors of 'sad truths'.
