johnroberts 0 Posted April 26, 2010 The camera and lens are working a treat. I love the clarity and detail contained within the image. Most of all I like the composition, as that's what it's all about. Excellent low light colours contrasted by the colour and light from the f/g boat.I agree with you about the rating and prior to viewing this shot I had uploaded for critique only as well. Could be the way to go ! Regards...John Link to comment
jtipton 0 Posted April 26, 2010 Great job capturing this beautiful wooden vessel. Beyond that the calm of the lake and the picturesque setting draws me in. They say a great picture evokes emotion and this one does for me. There is something magic about a lake in the early morning or in the glooming after sunset that always puts me in a happy place. Can't even explain it, but this picture has that effect. Almost like looking at a picture of the ocean and being able to smell it. BW- Jim Link to comment
Christal1664882414 0 Posted April 26, 2010 What time of day did you take this, Alf? The lighting and colors are exquisite! I agree with Jim that this evokes all kinds of feelings, including the urge to hop on that boat! You've allowed the viewer to feel a part of the scene. The composition itself is perfect, and the clarity is remarkable! Link to comment

carlwakefield 0 Posted April 26, 2010 An Excellent shot and I would happly rate 7/7. The vertical and horizontal lines really work well super compostion and great colour and light. This last light and sunset and long exsposure is perfectly done. There is the post processing that is intersting. The shadows from the piers strong with the shadows in the water. The foreground jetty has no shadows or signs of a shadows? The light on front of boat appears to be there but the light source is missing. But this lighting of the boat makes the image. The inside front of the boat is lighted by prost processing as is the front und the pier. Saying all that the pictures shows a tranquile and dream world and is perfectly presented. Well done. alfbailey 3 Posted April 26, 2010 JOHN Many thanks for your kind comments and support, I really am pleased you liked it.I think the "critique only" route is going to be the way to go for a lot of people, and for good reason. Thanks again John, your visits are always appreciated.Kind RegardsAlfJIMSincere Thanks! I know exactly what you mean, there is something about boats and lakes that is just so attractive, this particular vessel is based on the old Lake Steamers that carried tourists around the lake, and indeed still do. the wooden textures and colours of the boat and landing stage are what inspired me to take this shot. I really appreciate your imput Jim.Kind RegardsAlfILKKAMany thanks for your visit and kind words, much appreciated!Warm RegardsAlfCHRISTALThank you for your very kind comments, the shot was taken at 8.15pm on Saturday night, (yeah I know that might sound a bit sad, nothing better to do on a Saturday night, but really theres no where else I would rather have been) : - )I watched the boat operator bring her into shore and tie her up for the night and then wandered over to take a closer look at the very beautiiful Annie I'm really pleased you liked it Christal and appreciate your imputKind RegardsAlfBOBBYMany thanks for your visit and your very kind words, much appreciated!Warm RegardsAlfCARLSincere Thanks for your visit and your very kind comments. The absence of any shadows on the foreground Jetty is nothing to do with my PP work, ( though you did have me thinking, and I checked the RAW file just in case) In reality there are no obvious actual shadows at all in this image, and the reason for that is because you need a fairly strong light source to cast a shadow, as the sun has set behind the hills to the right, there is no such light source. Where I think you may be getting slightly confused is that the distant Jetty's show a "reflection" in the water, but not a shadow as such, and of course the foreground jetty cannot show such a reflection from the position the shot was taken. I did use photoshop to highlight the colours of the boat and used a minimal amount of sharpening. Thanks again Carl I really appreciate your imput Kind RegardsAlfALBERTOMany thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated!HOLGERMany Thanks for your very kind words, I am really flattered that you feel a touch of envy, it's exactly how I felt when I first saw that image of yours "The Trout Cichlid" I love that photo. papasan 0 Posted April 27, 2010 Nice work Alf. I like the clarity of the photo and the colors. Interesting composition as well, there is a nice play of vertical and diagonal lines. I wonder what a lower perspective following the mooring line from the wharf to the boat would have looked like (not to take anything away from this shot just an alternative take). Yes i agree with you regarding the rating system, and i have also gone the "critique only" way for many weeks now. But the "critique only" also has its pitfalls. the random showing of the photos in the critique forum means that one photo may appear once for a few minutes or 100 times... There is no way to predict it so a good photo may not get viewed by many people. I had photos in the early days of this site that were visited nearly 50,000 times, but now i'm quite happy if one of my photo gets 20 visits. The challenge is to build a group of like minded people who will visit your page regularly and offer honest views about your work. cheers - michel Link to comment

alfbailey 3 Posted April 27, 2010 Thank you for your kind comments and observations, I had the same idea as yourself about a lower perspective following the mooring line, but looking through the viewfinder showed the distant moorings cut in half, and another upright post that would have been on the left of the image and looking at odds somehow, nice to know we are thinking along the same lines though!I think you have got the right idea about finding like minded people that will offer good advice and honest appraisal, and I also think that more and more people are going down the "crique only" route, this being the case i think it will self generate to an extent as people continue to be disillusioned with the rating system. Sincere thanks for your visit and your imput Michel.Kind RegardsAlfRUUDMany Thanks for your visit and very kind words, much appreciated!Kind RegardsAlf Link to comment

Not Here 93 Posted April 27, 2010 Alf... Well, I'm late to the party but I like that my eyes are immediately drawn to this beautiful warm, wood boat, followed by a curiosity about it's use. I feel there's a nostalgic story here, even to the name of the boat. Then my eyes get pulled to the background with the gorgeous late afternoon blues. A scene that could stand on it's own without Annie. The combination of the two is stunning. Excellent... Mike Link to comment
gb3 6 Posted April 27, 2010 Powerful blue and the orange-blue combo works well, as they are complementary colors. I think this is a great shot but I wish that the column wasn't there or at least was farther back. Maybe more of the deck too. But these are nitpicks. Nice image,G Link to comment
m_akin 2 Posted April 28, 2010 6,6 very good dof and sharpness...a little too saturated colors, but this gives another mood to the pic....congrats Link to comment
andrea-de-bonis 6 Posted April 28, 2010 alf, i agree with the pvious comments ,s and point of wiew are persfect, and also the light the light in this evenin was nice, and well catched. but what i like here mostly is the strong contrast between the cold tones of the landscape and the warm tones of annie . this enfatize the beauty of annie, and giv eoi a sort of superiority with other boats. nice done! jim_air 0 Posted April 28, 2010 Everything is so right. The entire photo is crisp. The "Annie" seems to have a glow. Fortunate that the other boats are all white with blue covers, as this shows the contrast even more. The angle just right. When I visited the Lake District with my Kiwi wife in 1995 we saw some nice sights but the visit was brief. What you show us is so much, much more. A certain magic ! Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted April 28, 2010 Just sheer beauty! This is impressive work you are presenting Alf. A fantastic atmosphere in the image with beautiful vivid colors. A rich sharpness, but also very gentle, in all the details. The way you composed the scene would make most photographers happy and your post processing reach new hights on this one. Congratulation to a very professional image. Take good care my friend anf all the best to you and your family from Jannica Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted April 28, 2010 The color is phenomenal, almost fluorescent in its intensity. Nicely handled. Link to comment
alfbailey 3 Posted April 28, 2010 BIRTEMany thanks for your visit and kind words, very much appreciated!Warm RegardsAlfMIKEThank you for looking in and for your kind comments and observations! The boat is used for mostly tourist trips around Lake Derwent in the UK's Lake District, I think the design is based on the old lake steamers, (Diesel engine now of course), it is also used by local residents as a kind of bus service. I couldn't find out anything about the name, but like yourself I feel theres a stroy behind it too. Next time I'm up there, I will ask the boat skipper and see what he can tell me about it. Thank again MikeKind RegardsAlfGREGMany thanks for your visit and your kind comments and thoughts, very much appreciated!I agree with you about foreground post, it does look a bit obtrusive and kind of hides some of "Annie" but some things are unavoidable and this was one of them. The only way I could have got more of the decking into the frame would be for me to stand in the water, and errm well it just isn't that warm in the UK yet, but seriously I do take your point, and thank you for your imput.Kind RegardsAlf MEHMETMany thanks for your visit and comments, much appreciated, the saturation of "Annie" is toned down slightly from the original, but I agree with you with regard to the blue covers on the other boats, I just plain forgot to tone them down.Kind RegardsAlfANDREASincere Thanks for your visit and comments, I agree with you "Annie" does have that look of superiority about her. I really appreciate your imput Andrea.Kind RegardsAlfJIMMany Thanks for your visit and very kind comments! The lake district is an awe inspiring place, and one of my favourite locations in the UK, the changes in the light can dramatically change the mood of the place instantly and it isn't uncommon to have a folder of photographs taken on the same day looking like 2 or more entirely different days becuase of the sudden weather changes. It isn't suprising that this place has inspired writers and poets. Your words "a certain magic" sums the place up nicely. I hope you will be able to visit again one day JimKind RegardsAlfAIVARSincere thanks for looking in, I really appreciate your kind commemts.Kind Regards AlfJANNICAI am very flattered by your very kind comments, and can't thank you enough!
