"The Three Graces" are the names given to the building with the clock

(The Liver Building) and the next two to the right. I was hoping to get

some nice reflections from the river, but it was too windy and the river

was moving too fast, any tips from people with experience of night time

city shots would be appreciated.

All comments and thoughts are very welcome.

Thank You.

Nice night shot Alf! I like the way you composed the image, and the length of exposure appears to be correct as well. I can't help you much with city shots I'm afraid - just not my realm.

All the best,

Neil

I agree with Neil. Great job on the exposure. Also, nice job on the WB setting or post adjusting. Night shots on AWB seem to turn out to warm/yellow. This is just right. Well done.-Jim

Wow......this is breathtaking. I think this is one of the best night shots I have ever seen. Great work. Into my favorites this one goes. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Patsy

I think the most experienced minds have commented on the technical details that I still am not experienced enough at to even comment. But...I do know that it is a beautiful night shot, great detail, the exposure must be right as I have not done a night shot that I'm happy enough with to even post. Very nicely done Alf; beautiful composition.

Great shot Alf so sharp ,i have taken photos from that point early evening but never that late ,scary place that Woodside that time of night ,hope you like the football in joke ,i was on the water front around the docks on sunday and even went on the big wheel but there was to much haze .i am sure you have seen the skyline change so much over the years not all for the best , but you allways do it proud Barrie ,

A nicely composed and sharp shot, especially if there was a lot of wind. I like the color you have here and not knowing how it looked while standing there….this looks pretty good.

I do night shots of my area when I can get out there and it usually takes me a few shots to know what settings I need to adjust. First I always make sure I am wearing the right socks ;) Sometimes using tungsten/WB and a third under exposed work well if there a lot of city lights, you just need to play with it. If you don’t do long exposures say f8 you can usually get the starburst effect on lights. Keep playing with it Alf, you have talent and always capture amazing images!

Take care, Pamela

Thanks for looking in Neil and for your kind comments. It's not my realm either really but errm ....I always admire other peoples and thought I'd give it a go!

MAURIZIO

Thank you for your kind comments.

JIM

Many thanks for your kind comments, I did experiment with the WB and the first two images I processed had that yellow/orange tinge, so on my next attempt I desaturated it slightly and that seemed to help.

PATSY

I'm really pleased you liked it, and I'm very honoured for it to be included in your favourites, Thank you.

MARY

Thank you for looking in. much appreciated.

GAIL

Thank you for your kind comments, though you are far too modest I know just how creative you can be. This view is synonymous with Liverpool, it would be the view that every visitor and sailor would see as they cruised up the River Mersey to land in the port of Liverpool,, and its special to me because it's my original home city.

Some of the architecture in the city is awsome, but I struggle to find any aesthetic beauty in some of the more modern buildings. Thanks for looking in Gail.

ALBERTO

Thank you so much, I'm really pleased you like it!

JOHN

I like the footie reference John, but after Liverpool got beat by a bunch of pie eaters I'm hanging my head in shame.....well for now anyway : - )

The waterfront has changed John, some of it is great, the re-opening of the canal in frony of The Liver Buildings looks really nice, but the architecture of some of the modern buildings leaves a lot to be desired in my humble opinion. Thank you for your kind comments Barrie, much appreciated!

KEITH

I hope you are keeping well, I keep looking to see if you have posted anything but I assume you must be busy doing other things. Thank you for looking in mate, I appreciate your comments

CALVIN

Thank you for your observations, you are very kind.

PAMELA

I have seen some of your night shots, they are brilliant!

I really appreciate those hints and tips, I have made a note of them.

I think I had the right sock on........or was it the left......anyway, it did a fine job of keeping my ears warm : - )

I will take your very good advice and errrm ....."Keep playing with it" : - )

Sincere Thanks Pamela

I am trying to think if I may have seen you take this shot. There was a fellow photographer taking photos a little further down river on Woodside when I was taking new shots of the altered skyline of Liverpool.

This view is one that is very familiar to me but I would say that I think is a little too bright. The Liver building look a little "off" like you have artificially lightened the photo. This is the thing that I think are putting me off the photo as it look un-natural.

That said it is still a great shot of a changed skyline. It's just not the best I have seen, though that may be due to the un-natural feel and judging it by the other skyline photos I've seen.

I suggest you look at the time on the clock and perhaps the title of the shot, as I can assure you there was no one for miles around when I took these images.

I am always willing to hear comments from anyone who cares to post them, and learn from the more experienced and informed photographers on this site, maybe you could teach me?

My monitor was colour calibrated on 25th January 2010, when was yours done?

This shot, like shots of the Eiffel Tower, The Empire State building will never be original, however my particular tones and lighting are what makes it original.

I have not "Artificially Lightened the photo" as you suggest, in fact quite the contrary, I actually toned it down. I am quite sure there are many more shots of the Liverpool skyline that are technically far superior to this one, and I would be really pleased to see yours in order that I can learn more. Finally I am at least grateful that you have the courage of your convictions when you rated this image low, there so many that fail to leave a name or a reason for doing so.

Thank you for your invaluable observations and insight.

Alf.........I really like this cityscape, it looks sharp and with just the right exposure, I think the colours look natural too, although I confess I'm not familiar with this particular area. I think Martin must be looking at a different image than the rest of us, but having seen his portfolio I suppose his inexperience must be forgiven... Great shot Alf!

Alf, I was aware of the time you took the photo. I wondered because I was doing a combined photo shoot filming session between 11pm and 1am a little while back. I thought it odd that someone else was there.

As for my comments on the Liver building looking artificially lightened, I have since taken the trouble to view the photo on my other monitors (I have two LCD screens and an good old CRT). On my CRT the colours are a much more accurate, which is why I use it for editing/viewing photos and videos. On that monitor your photo does look far better. I apologise.

With that said I'd like to add that you did well to find an angle that means the graces aren't obscured. That new ferry terminal is a pain in the backside, but I suppose it is part of the new skyline.

Many thanks for your astute observations and very kind comments, much appreciated

No Problem, but you can also check the date of the exposure by clicking on the "Details" tab.. | would agree totally with your comment about the new modern buildings on the waterfront, and they do obsure a decent view from many angles. I don't think they are in keeping with classic buildings like "The Three Graces" and my personal view is that they shoud have either been more sympathetic in thier elementary design, or simply refused planning permission for close proximity to such timeless beauty as these.

Regards

Alf
