for me this typifies bad b&w. It's not the subject, just the blandness of the colours. personally, i like to see good spectrum in b&w, blacks being blacks and white being white. was this converted from colour?

Yes, shot was originally in colour and this was my first experience in changing to greyscale using the Channel Mixer in PS CS2. Personally i also felt the conversion was a little "grey" but darkening it further and bringing out blacks and whites lost the definition in the rust.

 

Any suggestions?
