Resistance is futile

pmj

My colleague Paul Spruit wanted to take a nightshot image with his digital camera, after we'd been working for a client until about midnight. Since the weather wasn'tso good, we decided to try an indoor shot of a few servers and some networking hardware instead.

We used Paul's Pentax Optio 330 in manual mode: ISO 200, 15 seconds at f/2.6. Stack a fewboxes as an ad hoc tripod replacement, leave the lights on, focus, switch the lights off, take the picture.

I should add that this photo is mostly Paul's work. I merely switched the printer on, operated the light switch and did some Photoshop afterwards (crop, levels, a very little bit of saturation, and an unsharp mask).

The light looks almost tangible, or heavy. Especially the red on the left. I also like the "grain" (I guess it's really noise in a digital photo) - it adds to spookiness of the scene. I really like this shot - I'll have to try some like it!

This is really just a 'having a bit of fun' shot; see technical

details on how this was achieved. Perhaps the 'Borg green' is a bit

overpowering compared to the red and blue, but I still like it.

Comments appreciated.

You need to add one element that is totally bizzare and out of place that is hidden and only seen when the viewer looks carefully. (such as a disembodied hand on the dark top shelf, or a finger emerging from one of the boxes, or a dead rat, or shredded necktie, or a decapitated teddybear.) Ultimately this is just a photo of the equipment rack done in colored light. Adding a horror component makes it into something completely different.

Looks like a Combat Information Center or a Submarine Control Room. The lighting is cold, giving me a feeling of stealth and purpose.

Good combination of prime colors and an interesting arrangment. I think it would have been better without that white streak along the upper right edge.

As for the colors, I don't feel the green overpowers the picture. On the contrary, I feel it provides a central focus that is nicely offset but both the red and blue.
