pmj 6 Posted August 15, 2005 This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum. When including images, please make sure they are relevant to the discussion, not more than 511 pixels wide, sufficiently compressed and make sure to enter a caption when uploading. ken_thalheimer 3,739 Posted August 15, 2005 Original in that it's quite different from what we normally see. I think it's a good choice in that it conveys the feeling of being there and the heat very well. Technically it's also good. Congrats on POW Link to comment
tylerfrans 0 Posted August 15, 2005 Very nice photo! Maybe a more snappy title would better suit this great photo... But I guess that's not what counts. Congrats. Link to comment
jamie turnbull 0 Posted August 15, 2005 Beautiful Image. I expecially love the way you composed the deep water along side of the red shallow, and then the almost black ground around the pool. Congrats Link to comment
pabloconrad 0 Posted August 15, 2005 Reminds me of Yellowstone National Park. Beautiful photo. Link to comment
arnabbanerjee 0 Posted August 15, 2005 The shoreline takes viewer's eyes to the upper left corner which is in the mist. But the ridgeline breaks/dilutes that sense of mystery - I am wondering how the photo will look without the background mountain ridge line - just leaving the top part in the mist and make viewers wonder about what is there? amalsircar 2 Posted August 16, 2005 Arnab made a very good suggestion. In any case, this is a beautiful image,so colourful, nicely contrasted and composed. Best regards to Rodislav and the Elves. Link to comment
rrohan 0 Posted August 16, 2005 The high contrast really makes this photo. I'm curious if the ground was really that dark or the high contrast was added. My photos of Waiotapu's Champagne Lake are washed out by comparison. I know these kind of areas are in a constant state of change so I am guessing it did somewhat. Excellent photo. Well done. thomas_durst 0 Posted August 16, 2005 Yes, it is an intersting and unusual subject and the composition and the exposure are good but i do not see anything special or artistic about this image. 4/4 for above average. Link to comment
richard thompson www.fotoz 0 Posted August 16, 2005 Very very nice. I will be there in Feb 06 - you have set the bar ! Great colour and composition. Thanks for posting. Link to comment
vasilis 0 Posted August 16, 2005 I like the image, the composition is correct, the sense of being there and the sense of heat is given to the viewer. Also the exposure is correct although I suppose that there is some postprocessing. I think that the value of nature photos like this one is given by the fact that someone traveled there with his equipment and took this photo for us to see. A previous commentor said that he cannot see anything artistic or special about this image. Ok, but the question then is what a photographer can do to improve such an image? Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted August 16, 2005 ..."mystery" is fine, but an image that's entirely abstract, as this would be without the treeline, wouldn't mysterious...it'd be nothing. The treeline is one of the keys to the success of this photograph. I like this photo a lot. Link to comment
nirakara 0 Posted August 16, 2005 Definitely Interesting. To me, it is the transitional red between the mist and the "water" line that makes the picture. I like the gradualness of the mist rising up, cutting it would make it kinda abrupt I think. Link to comment
michel_hardy_vallee1 0 Posted August 16, 2005 See http://burtynsky.stanford.edu/projectforum/Burtynsky/32 for a comparison. It was taken near nickel mines in Sudbury, Ontario (Canada). Link to comment
michaelseewald 237 Posted August 17, 2005 As a couple folks have properly pointed out, your eye goes out of the top looking for the center of interest. And then others have stated, there is none. Nice feel to the image though, and the steam and color make it a really good image, but not a WOW. Link to comment
darren_gayle 0 Posted August 17, 2005 I hate to point out something which seems very disturbing about the image. If you look at the image crop above the mist seems to be edited in the lower frame as it has very sharp edges. Rest of the mist in the frame has natural faded margins. May be something was cloned out. Anyway its a very good photograph and has good atmosphere. Nice colors. A crop suggested earlier removing the top frame looks good too. Link to comment
