Amazied by the Spider

Post what kind of equipment you are taking the picture with. I could start listing complaints about the picture but some of them you might not be able to fix due to camera limitations.

I know this is not a good picture. I think it was taken with a disposable camera.

 

Well, I'm going to skip quality issues with this, based on what you said the equipment was. So, on to the good. I like the artistic aspect...it's often hard to get our pets to do anything that resembles a good picture, especially when you have a camera ready to capture it. But, you got the candid image down.

 

A few improvements (which may not all be possible with candid pictures) try to get the background more appealing. I think that's the biggest drawback with me on this one. If you would have removed the bowls (or shoes...whatever they are) first, it would have added a great deal to the picture. Also, if you would have used an SLR, you could have put on a polarizing filter to remove some of the glare on the tank, which would make the tank less abrupt, and may give an illusion that the cat is staring at a spider that's not in a tank. Perhaps even if you cropped out the top of the tank. Finally, play with some contrast, shadow, and highlights in Photoshop to get a more aesthetic appeal to the photo.

The photo content is good. The direct flash created the reflection off the tank and creates a distracting point. .. if you had set up this shot. you might have wanted a light from the side and maybe another light or reflector on the other side. and then a polarizing filter (on an SLR camera). a polarizer would not cut the reflection of a direct light that much. the picture is a good start though. I think I would have preferred fish in the tank though :)
