Here is another carnival worker who is friends with the Dragon

Master. His job is to help people getting on and off the rides, and

to make sure no one gets hurt. I also think he has the best smile

of anyone who works at the carnival. His smile is full of energy

and sincerity. When I asked if I could take his photograph he lit

up like a 1000 watt light bulb.

Great portrait. Its brilliant shots like this that reassure me that digital can does not mean losing character and DoF.

Howard, 1000W bulb indeed! His grin is just fantastic. Great capture at just the right moment. Did you take a few shots of him and settled on this or did you just do a one off?

I like the form of the background too - almost makes him look like he has wings sprouting from his shoulders! :)

Is it me and my monitor or is the subject just a touch out of focus, especially around his eyes?

Regards, M

Actually, I made two exposures and both looked about the same. As for being out of focus, I don't see it that way. The image is a litle soft but my guess is that it was the lighting. I am noticing that the 10D doesn't like cloudy days. I will go back & check the original to see if something happened in post processing.

I really like the crop on this shot. I like how you have the leading lines of the ride on the left that help to pull you into the image right up to the focal point. The only thing I wish you had more of is the cross as it tells us a little more of the subject. To me it looks like the contrast might be a little high as some of the detail is lost in the blacks.

Well so much for my therory about the contrast being high! LOL

That color picture reall jumps out at you and I like the crop in it too. I don't think it looks as soft as the B&W shot. I think I like the croping beter in this shot though.

Hmmm... must be my eyes and/or monitor - I still think the subject's eyes are a touch out of focus :) Howard, as long as you are happy with it, who am I to judge :)

Hey, I really like the colour version too. In fact, I'm leaning more towards it then the BW version. Just me thoughts... M

On the one hand, I really liked the crop when I first looked at it; on the other, looking at the full photo, I feel like the cross and the earrings convey something that is missed in the tighter crop, especially the cut-off half cross.

Prefer the B/W & tighter crop. For me it is one of those "less is more", & while i understand

comments regarding the cross, etc, IMO, the "spirit" of the cross lives in this version.

I would like to note that I am finding great pleasure in your B/W's.

I'll bet dozens of people say they know this guy or someone that looks just like him. I do! A beaming happy-go-lucky face, slice of the world of optimism. I often wonder if smiling faces really shift the focus away from the hurt and anguish within... But then again, maybe that's just the projection of my own (our own) perceptions? It seems so much harder to find the joy and bliss in the world, that maybe it comes as a shock to me when someone appears to have had an almost easy and natural affinity for finding and manifesting joy? As always, yours is always thought provoking imagery at the very least!

The B&W simplifies the composition, as well as your astute cropping...and the result is wonderfully effective!
