Wow. That the stork is covered in mud from the struggle makes this even more "in your face" for me.

What a shot. Perfect work with both your depth of field and shutter speed. Not sure but I think I might crop off some of the left, and/or PS out the other bird - at first I thought it was a frog hopping away! Might also lighten the image. No matter what it's a terrific capture. Congrats!

spectacular shot, strong composition and really gives a great idea of the environment despite the DOF, good work!

I like the way the flamigos add pink and beauty while the jackal and stork add death and darkness. This contast makes the picture. 7/7

This is a superb capture of nature. The blurred birds create an interesting background. I wouldn't clone out the wader; it creates a triangle of elements and I also find it interesting that it is oblivious to the fate of the stork. Well shot.

This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum.

When including images, please make sure they are relevant to the discussion, not more than 511 pixels wide, sufficiently compressed and make sure to enter a caption when uploading.

apart from the fact that this is really a great shot :-)

(I would not take out the other bird and the DOF is perfect)

I wonder if there could be a point in discussing the fact of vertical vs horizontal framing.

Would it have made this photo even better if a horizontal framing was used?

Simply stunning photo. Perfect, imo. Love the DOF, that bit of

green at the top together with the blurry pink flamingos, and the

small bird at left, which, together with the main subject, creates a

perfectly balanced and almost black and white foreground. Now,

really, THIS is an original and wonderful wildlife photo.

As for the question of an horizontal framing, it's an interesting

one, but I feel an horizontal frame is bound to fail - without even

knowing what's around. An horizontal frame would not allow to

include the grass in the foreground and the green area +

flamingos at top - or else the main subject would become way

too small. Therefore, going horizontal would mean to lose part of

the great context in this photo.

Congratulations, Eugene ! Truly a brilliant capture...

I have nothing else but to support all the previous comments. Great wildlife photo.

...I don't see any stork though. It looks the bird in the foreground is an avocet and birds background are lesser flamingoes.

Life goes on. That is the message of this photo for me. The other bird in the foreground and the flamingos in the background continue to feed even as this drama has been unfolding. Excellent work, and congratulations on being awarded Photo of the Week.
