This picture was taken in Northern Iraq a few months after the

occupation in 2003. The couple are Kurds who had lost five sons

during the Anfal campaign in 1988, and had lived in a camp for

displaced persons ever since.

 

I don't know the significance of the flower on the wall.

if your placement was intentional and if you asked them to look terrified, you are a genius. If this is just a snapshot, you got lucky cause the whole thing works on a bizarro level with this viewer (and that wall flower makes it perfect) and that's disregarding the painful context you provided in your comment.
