The yellow-brownish of the branches complements very well with the blue of the sky, it gives live to the shot. The lower half, on the other sense, with that branch touching softly the calmed water, gives sense of profound peace.

My minor objection is the thick black frame, and the too strong presence of the title on the bottom, probably reducing text's opacity mask to 50% would have fited better with the peaceful mood of the shot.

This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum.

When including images, please make sure they are relevant to the discussion, not more than 511 pixels wide, sufficiently compressed and make sure to enter a caption when uploading.

Beautiful foto my friend!
I'm very happy this shot was chosen as POTW. It is wonderfully composed.
I would have been tempted to try a wider shot, just to capture the edges of this tree. But I really like the way you filled the frame with the branches.

A very nice effort. I would've improved the shot by dropping a pebble/rock to where the branch touches the water. The round ripple effect would've turned this into a masterpiece.

Wouldn't change a thing. Nicely seen and captured with wonderful light and color.

As a side note, even though taken in Canada, however having followed Katrina's devastation this last week I can't help but be reminded of the disaster when seeing a large, still body of water.

Very nice photo. I disagree with Yaron though about the ripples; I think a calmer lake and a clearer sky would contribute to the aesthetic quality of this piece because I find the clouds, the reflection of the clouds and the irregular shoreline coupled with the complexity of the branches to be a little too busy in the middle section.

Patrick,

For me the beautiful light elevates this image beyond ordinary. The subltle reflection also adds significantly to the overall composition. Congratulations on seeing this moment and sharing it with us in your photograph.

Wonderful side lighting.

It would be interesting to upload a series of images that feature the same composition taken every hour from about 2PM until just after sunset and see how people rate them. This shot is about patience . . . . . waiting for the light to be just right, then waiting some more until you're sure it's beyond anything useful.

Well done, Patrick. Doesn't even need cropping. . . . . . .

Very nice, but I would crop the right side to just outside the bottom right, dark branch that sticks out almost horizontally. I think such a crop gives a better balance. Others may disagree.
