Hello Stefan,

When you send a photo to the Critique Forum, you are given the opportunity to submit the photo 'only for critique' and therefore not presented for rating.

I choose this alternative because I find the rating system is ultimately so subjective as to be all but meaningless. Perhaps you or someone else can explain to me without any ambiguity what excellent means and what bad means and what aesthetic means...

Peter

p.s. I now see that 5 people have managed to rate this photo. Since I typically submit the photo for critique as soon as I post it on photo.net, I have no idea how anyone managed to do that before I submitted the photo for critique only. Still, 6.8 is not a bad average. Damn! You see how quickly and easily the rating system lures one's fickle nature...

Oh that's a very very German picture! Bikes, lamps, taxis - all carefully sorted and packed together... :)

Right on Peter, the rating system is very basic, and doesn't really mean a lot quite frankly. We would all like our pics rated high, but people should comment more on other peoples photos, otherwise !!!! I have seen excellent photos rated only average, and more familiar names with average photos raved about (no disrespect intended) I go through them all and try to be impartial. A good shot will sell itself.

What's going on here??

If the rating system doesn't work properly anymore, then I will rate right here:

Aesthetics: 2 ----- Originality: 2

Why? Because I hate it!

However, I think others will find this quite acceptable...

When I now go to the folder section for 'single pictures' and then click on 'details' (as opposed to simply clicking on the details section immediately below this picture) I now see that four of the ratings have vanished and there now remains but a single [anonymous] 7/7 ...

I also see that this image has been viewed by more than 22,000 people, which is far more than any of the other images in my photo.net folders.

Anyway, I now know that Andreas hates the photo and rates it at 2/2. Stefan wants to know why he cannot use the rating tool on my photo. Someone else has rated it at 4/4. Andrey thinks the scene looks very German and indeed it is taken in Heidelberg, in Germany, where I am currently living. And a mysterious rater has given the image a 7/7.

I make no claim at all regarding my creative or technical abilities. The whole point of my posting here on photo.net, is in the hope of receiving a certain degree of photographic advice and commentary.

I understand nothing, but then again, I never did... :)

Peter
