The edge of Light

ian cameron

A rocky plateau about a third of the way up Torridons Tom na Gruigach in the Highlands of Scotland provides a welcome respite from a remarkably step ascent. The plateau is littered with boulders that contrast quite starkly with the ruddy colour of the grass on a November afternoon. However it was the view behind of Loch Torridon being peppered with ladders of light that filled me with wonder. Careful placement of a 0.6ND grad filter ensured a balanced exposure. Please feel free to visit my website for some other recent uploads, Transient light, There are some superb new shots at Timecatcher too.

great looking landscape - i like the sun rays in the background - good textures in the land and sky

The foreground and the background are both very nice. The foreground alone makes the shot stand out, and the same can be said of the background. Add to that a beautiful sky and you have a killer photo.

The lighting's great, and I like the colour tones of the grasses, but what I really like are the colours and textures of the rock. That Torridon sandstone looks so old and weathered - I think you capture that sense of the age of the place really well here. Best, Jeremy.

Ian this great, as usual! But what I am really impressed with and envious about is your ability to hike up into these locations carrying that 6x7 (and its accesories). I am happy that someone is able to do it. Regards.

Hi, I gave you 4/4 and I guess I should explain why. This is great scene you could approach much better, sorry. Composition - stone corner is occulting almost 1/2 of the lake, subject important in this scene indeed, I would suggest to try different angles of view, bit higher one cutting little bit of grass in front would be my choice. Foreground is just too bright as the overall image look is like brightness control abuse in PS what made great image looking flat. I'm sure it wasn't like it is in this presentation, lower brightness will ad dramatic mood and contrast so needed particularly in foreground. I don't think stones in front was your idea to make a prominent subject, this scene is strong because of background, mountains ridge with great illuminated lagoon in front and fabulous light you got in the time of your shot not even mentioning sky with great looking clouds. All these elements could be exploited much more; this is why 4/4. Hope this helps you in your further work.

Hi Miroslav each to their own, nothing I can say will make you change your mind about it but I can assure you I liked it or I wouldn't have uploaded it. This picture is several years old and consistently sells so something about it must be appealing and it will resurface again as a limited edition print for the supermarket chain Lidl's in 2009. I admit the processing is rough here, but this was originally presented years ago and scanned on an Epson flatbed with no profiling, viewed on a low cost monitor and adjusted in an early version of Photoshop Elements. It has since been re-scanned. The version below is identical to the original tranny and I can assure you it appears exactly as intended including my choice of composition.
