Somethings missing... I too have many of the blue sky, frozen lake, dead grass pictures. Adding the frames does not make a medicore shot into a good picture. Look at Carsten Ranken's posts for some ideas on creating depth to the sky. I like your Landscape posts, nice work.

In general, I like the photo. I must be honest though and say that I liked the vignetting more on the thumbnail than I did when I clicked it and saw the larger photo. I think the effect works better on the thumbnail as it makes one feel as though they are peeking into something and seeing a beautiful scene. On the larger photo it seems more of an error.

The scene is very nice. I do wish the foreground grass were not in shadow, but there may have not been anything you could do.

Thanks for sharing!

hey guys - thanks for the comments.

russ - as far as my memory serves (levity alert), everything that was in my camera field of view is in the photograph, so I'm not certain how something could be missing.

re: depth in the sky - a careful look at my nature/landscape photography will reveal that my photographs are rarely about "depth". in fact, i work very deliberately with the formal 2 dimensional characteristics of the medium. i consider my work to be representational rather documentational, therefore, attempting to create the illusion of 3 dimensional depth in a photograph is very low on my priority list.

the "frame", which appears on all of my square thinking photographs is not an attempt to "elevate" my photograph from one category to another. it is simply a visual device that i use to reinforce the idea of photography as a "contained" or "selective" view of the world.

in any event, some may see this as a picture of frozen lake, blue sky, and dead grass. others may see it as a photoraph of something else entirely. Although it must be said that those who see it as something else generally do so within the context of the greater body of my square-thinking work.
