The only thing that bothers me about this one is that I don't see any explanation for the kid's seemingly sad posture.

LOL. I know. ;)

I'm just saying, there's a contrast going on between the "fun" represented by the ferris wheel, and the "sadness" represented by the boy's posture. If there were some clue as to what happened (spilled cotton candy or something), that would tie these two disparate things together. As it stands, the viewer is, or at least I am, left wondering what happened, and the story feels incomplete.

It's a very well done photo, though. My comment was only from this one particular narrative point of view.

I go along with you, Doug. Making a connection between the elements of a photograph is part of what photography is about. The fact that there is no connection can also work, but rarely. Contrast, juxtaposition, comparison all work, and if there is a story, that gets to the viewer's heart (or soul, if he has one). Technique is not an end in itself: all that sort of stuff does, along with a lot of modern 'art', is to say 'Ain't I clever' or 'Ain't I an artist'. This can get exceedingly tedious. It's a well seen photo though.

I guess it also really depends on how you view the photograph. To me the kid looks tired and spent. You can see the farris wheel in the background. This should let the viewer know that this is happening at a park/fare of some sort.

After running around, playing and going on rides all day, the kid is spent and needs a break. That's the way I see it anyways.

A very nice photo Laiz. I do like the composition with the big farris wheel towering over everything in the background and then the little boy up close. I think it gives a great sence of depth and scale in the image. Good work.

Thank you all for your comments but I have no idea what's going on with this boy. It was early evening, I was about to leave the park when I saw him laying on the edge of the fountain. I sat behind him and started shooting and he didn't even move. Maybe he was sleeping. Maybe he had just been to the ride where you sit in a yellow egg shaped cart and it enters a dark tunnel and spins like hell and makes you sick. Maybe he was trying to smell his elbow. Lucky me that photo.net doesnt have a rating category for interview.

Unfortunately for us? We're just spectators expressing a point of view. How can that be unfortunate for us? Nice tree though.

"Smell his elbow"! ;)

I think we're all correct here. You don't *need* a story, but I, as just one particular viewer, felt a hankering for one. Some people will like this just as it is. I lean more towards Paul's view, but that's just my taste.

Laiz said this was in the late afternoon, which suggests one subtle way to get closer to a story that I'd pick up on without having to change the main elements of the photo. If there was some hint that this was late afternoon, or even evening, that would explain the boy's pose.

I realize you came across this shot by chance, so you couldn't add or subtract things willy-nilly. I'm just pointing out what would have improved this, just from my own point of view, not everyone's of course.

Is he sad? Maybe he is taking a break from all the fun and excitement, anyway, he adds to a nice composition, 6/6
