Sally Lightfoot Crab, Galapagos Islands.

arlo_midgett

Sometimes I really go after a picture. As anyone who's been to the Galapagos can attest, Sally Lightfoot crabs are very skittish. This photo was the culimation of over 5 minutes of trying to corner a crab and get my camera close enough for a macro shot. (Crabs flee sideways -- which makes it especially hard to get anterior shots!) No way I was going to be able to peer through the lens, though. This was shot in a crouch at arms' length. I'm pretty proud of the framing, considering.

Nice! It almost seems hand colored because of the monochromatic nature of the elements of the composition other than the subject. I like this image quite a bit. Nice Job!

I like this picture a lot too. I've been playing around with my macro lately and know how hard it is to get an animal to stay still long enough to get a tight focused shot. The colors are great. The crab almost looks cooked from the bright red color.

Just curious: Did you have to enhance the color digitally or did it come out like this from the lab (this is no critique, just wanna know how you did it). Actually I would be proud of this photo too.

Nope. I'm sure some colors were altered a tiny bit in the scan I did (1350 dpi Nikon LS-2000 negative filmstrip scan), but it's very close to what came back from the lab (Costco photo processing.) Thanks for the comment, btw.

Gotta agree with everyone else, this is one I'd be proud of, too. And I think sometimes you need to break the rules and go for centering your subject. Not often, but I think this was one of those times where it worked very well. (Of course, when the little devil won't sit still, it's not like you've got a lot of choice.) Congrats on a beautiful shot. I like this as much as any photo I've seen in the last month on photo.net. The contrast in the colors is what really do it for me here.
