Dark leaders

This is the original picture; ie not cropped, no major work done in Photoshop.

I am wondering about the background myself. It is a bit distracting. However, it is a strong subject, which might be able to compete successfully with this background?

If not, what sort of background would you suggest? Any tips on changing it in Photoshop? I have not done this before.
