I think it's well composed and framed. I don't know if it's "sad." I see it as more of an affirmation of life. Very nice.

I think you've over worked this image. You're techniques are the predominant elements in the image and they overwhem a subtle subject with loads of inherent metaphorical possibility that is now obscured. Lighten up... t

I agree with Tom. Less (effects) would increase the power.

I am not so sure about all the softness (my personal approach would have been not to hide or assume a need for decoration) but this is, nevertheless, a very original approach, as a theme and composition.. and it does allow a certain sense of the person to come through, although too general. (i also prefer it as above without the frame)
