photo was taken with a nikon Ftn camera, with a 105mm 2.5 lens.Film was Plus-x ,developed in microdol , 1 to 3 . There were very few lenses sharper that this early non-Ai nikkonr lens. It was designed to be sharpest at portrait distance and not infinity.

This reminds me of the excellent photography of the 1960's and 1970's in such mag's as Look and Life. Wonderful subject and tonal range

This is a fantastic image, with real soul and character. You just have to love black and white film.

Instead of eleborating on the positive parts, which have been done already and with which I agree in toto, I would like to respond to two critisicms made in the comments.

Firstly, I don't think it is "an object growing out of her head", which is akin to a tree trunk "growing" out of a subject's head. It looks like it is literally a pipe, tucked in the band around her head - fantastic.

In the second place, I don't agree with the looking away argument. I like it especially for that reason. It appears as if the two people from a village from who knows where, are oblivious to the presence of the photographer. This helps to "take me there" and immerse myself in the moment.

I just love everything in this photo. Long live the straight shot.

Regards

JH

Such a moving capture. I don't see the woman as being sad at all. She seems stoic. Such a loving capture, not only between them, but between the three of you.
