richard thompson www.fotoz 0 Posted March 2, 2005 What is extra special about this striking composition is the leading line of the foreground starts at the top of the image. This should be a photo of the week, really. Link to comment

arc 0 Posted April 29, 2005 I've been across this bridge and taken photos of it, But your photo of it just takes my breath away - it is so beautiful and so well done. Allan Link to comment
pmj 6 Posted February 6, 2006 This image has been selected for discussion. It is not necessarily the "best" picture the Elves have seen this week, nor is it a contest. It is simply an image that the Elves found interesting and worthy of discussion. Discussion of photo.net policy, including the choice of Photograph of the Week should not take place here, but in the Site Feedback forum. When including images, please make sure they are relevant to the discussion, not more than 511 pixels wide, sufficiently compressed and make sure to enter a caption when uploading. root 0 Posted February 6, 2006 What is it about this image that has garnered so much attention and such high rates? Setting aside the PN political aspects and the changes in rating habits over the last year, I think there really is something unique about this photograph. It's an interesting combination of a rhythmic presentation of familiar elements on the bottom half, integrated seamlessly with a minimalist graphic presentation on the top. Very clever. Guest Guest Posted February 7, 2006 Gerard, Wonderful dynamic in this shot. Its really about positive - negative space. I even like the blacking out of the underside of the bridge as contrast to the whiteing out of the receeding distance. When negative and positive space become equal, the effect can be powerful. What really impresses me, though, is the rest of your work. Are you familiar with Michael Kenna? You and he must be kindred spirits. He uses long exposure times to achieve his vision. Your portfolio speaks of solitude and quiet born from an awareness and delineation of nature to its essence. Thank you for your insight. Link to comment
Encourage Brent. Link to comment

Landrum Kelly 65 Posted February 7, 2006 The bridge is stunning in itself, but the black curve back toward the center as one goes to the top is what finally takes this out of the ordinary as a photo. Congratulations, Gerard, on having this picture named Photo of the Week. --Lannie Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 7, 2006 Each time I look at this picture I can't manage to see anything but a stylized smiling whale. An image that differs, IMO, from your other images, by its special and cool design, almost an advertizing poster. Congratulations again! Link to comment
billfoster 0 Posted February 7, 2006 I think that Carl, as always, really nailed what it is about this that makes it stand out. It is indeed two pictures in one with that perfect ying/yang sort of gradient in the top and that lovely curve at the bottom. This is the work of a true artisit. Anyone can take a nice picture of a beautiful bridge, but to elevate it into this sort of art ... wow. I don't know how I've missed this portfolio before but I'm going to spend some serious time looking at it. This is the finest POW I can recall seeing. Link to comment
mona_chrome 0 Posted February 7, 2006 I really think it would be hard to say much other than this is a very nicely done photograph. As I looked through the portfolio, this one does stand out for me, along with a couple of others, as very individually seen. I think the biggest disappointment for me, with this image and for most of your portfolio, is that we have to look at these on line rather than as prints. The way you push your tonal range, especially the high values, I think we lose their delicacy through the scans and with the upload. Nice work. Link to comment
