Water Shards

Sustained 30 m.p.h south winds on Lake Michigan gave some great opportunities with the waves for this south pierhead light. Mounted on a Bogen tripod system with legs extended wide so camera was 15 inches off the ground. ISO 200, shutter priority, evaluative metering, 1/500 second at F8, 0 compensation, no crop. Levels, color cast correction, and USM in PS7. **BEST VIEWED LARGE**

...your works never stop amazing all of us here (well, at least for me.) You're probably a person of perserverance and endurance to withstand all the extreme climates to bring us all those amazing images of various lighthouses. Very admirable indeed.

Thanks for the comments. Wilson, the storm and winter photography is something I really enjoy. When the weather forecast comes out with high winds and big waves, I grab my backpack and out to the Big Lake I go! I will probably never get all the sand out of my tripod legs...

hello from chicago. i love grandhaven and this is a great shot. although i wonder why the lines leading to the lighthouse are so blurry and faded? and the lighthouse is jagged edged?

Hi Moltabento! Perhaps your monitor is set to a lower resolution? On my monitor, everything is clear. Also, when one reduces a jpeg for web posting, it's obviously not quite as clear as the original since detail is lost in compression. I ran this shot off my printer yesterday on Ilford Pearl in 8x10 and I was very pleased with it. Nice, even toning, and the lighthouse, catwalk, and wave are as sharp as can be.

Yes indeed lovely image but it has been compressed too much. It is starting to break up on my monitor which is explained by incredibly low file size (71kB).

yeah it could be the monitor. anyways, i have always seen this lighthouse when it is calm. the waves are so nice. i always head for grand haven in the summer. the water is so perfect. another question for you, if i put the 200mm L glass on my elan 7, i obviously wouldnt get the 1.6X factor. Do you recommend any other 300mm glass which is a bit cheaper? thanks for your time. have you ever been to st.joseph lighthouse? I like it when the sun sets in the third week of april right behind the sears tower!

Moltabento, do you already have the 200/2.8 L? If so, I would highly recommend spending $250 on a 1.4x teleconverter. I use mine all the time with my 200mm with no loss of quality. It would make the 200 a 280/F4 lens. I also have the Elan 7 and use this combo. Take a look in my portfolio for some shots of St. Joseph and other Michigan lighthouses!

This a rockin! I really love the wave action your capturing here. Again, a nice warm tone to the sky. Nice work!
