Very pretty, but not original.

What is the meaning of "original"? I suppose it's one way of rating photographs. I'm sure Erik was not the first person to take a picture from this spot or other places like it. The way the wind causes the ripples on the opposite shoreline that creates a blue line, the concentric ripples on the right, the cloudless sky & the dead log, all may never come together exactly like this again. You might say that would make this photo "original".

I agree with you. I think people on this site don't look at the small things that make a photo original. Maybe this isn't the greatest photo ever taken but it is original in its own way. I see many photos that don't recieve high ratings because they aren't original. This isn't a good way to judge a photo. I think they should be judjed for composition, color and how the photo makes you feel. If you judge a photo by it being original, That means say in 200 years, It will be very hard to take a original photo because every idea and composition will be exhausted. Then how will we judge a photo?

I don't know Erik, but it seems to me very few people on this particular site really know how to judge a photo.[Myself included] After the new membership drive started I noticed more & more people racing though the critique area & throwing down numbers without really thinking about it. There used to be a rule here. If you issued someone a 3 or less, you had to write a comment. Same as giving out a 7. Oh well, it's a cliche for sure, but I know what I like & that's about it.

I say this is not an original image. That is my opinion and I do not go around slapping down ratings - I only rate something if the picture catches me for some reason. This picture did - it is pretty. Very pleasant. But then, there a a thousand pictures of lakes... and a thousand more with ripples in them. This is not original in my eyes, but then we all have our opinions don't we?

You're quite right, we all have our opinions, & if you insist on using that word "original", ok. If that's the case, this is just as original as a folder full of self portraits or waterfalls or street photos or nudes. By the way, I didn't mean to offend you or include you in the category of the people who mindlessly click on a # to rate someone's photo.
