The Naked Cowboy in Times Square

michaelbrochstein

In mid-December 2003 I was testing a new Nikon 12-24mm lens (on a D100) and figured that Times Square's lights might be fun to shoot at dusk. And there he was, the Naked Cowboy adding just the "perfect" foreground to Times Square's backdrop. I can't help but chuckle every time I see this shot (this is not at all a typical shot for me and is probably not indicative of what I typically use my camera for). Standing nearby, you hear the Naked Cowboy's spiel a multiple of times and his singing "The Naked Cowboy" on his guitar repeatedly just adds to the "experience". The reaction of tourists to him is fun to watch (he loves to pose with people - they usually give him a dollar to do this). I used the D100's built-in flash with a flash compensation setting of -1.7 EV. In hindsight I should have used -1.0 EV as my starting point. I hope this image brings a chuckle to your face as it did to mine when shooting and looking at it. If you think this photo was staged then I urge you to check out The Naked Cowboy's website (no kidding!).
