Despite their striking plumage and large size, Pileated woodpeckers can be very stealthy in forest environments quietly feeding at a honey hole of ants and other small insects. Such was the case the other day when suddenly an adult male vocalized loudly as it attacked another male, probably in defense of his territory. The dispute continued for a while with one dive-bombing the other followed by loud, overlapping vocals. A spectacle never witnessed before by these eyes of mine.

Bravo Charles, you have well documented this struggle between peaks, which are symmetrical, almost in front of a mirror. your accompanying note is very interesting, ciao Giangiorgio

Hi Charles,

I quite like the story that you tell here; it offers a perspective that we wouldn''t have if you hadn't written these introductory comments. The photo is beautiful, but only lacks the sharpness to be top notch. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent, thank you so much for the compliment. You’re quite right about the lack of sharpness, the one thing I regret about it.
