Normally I wouldn't photograph a butterfly on the ground, however this time I felt the color and texture of the surrounding pebbles would still compliment the natural beauty of this large butterfly species, common here in eastern North America. Considered leaving this in my personal files, but was inspired to share by recent posts from Vincent and Giangiorgio. Best regards, Charles.

this is a wonderful photo, as it shows how this eastern North American variant of the papilio machaon will sit on the ground eating other stuff than nectar. Furthermore, the composition is very different from most butterfly photos, showing the insect not from one side but in perspective. The only thing about this photo that I don't like is the 'big' pebble in front of the butterfly; but you had no choice there. Kind regards, Vincent

I like this setting. The rock colors definitely compliment the beautiful butterfly. Based on your low angle, this could not have been easy to take the shot. Well done! Todd
