A photo made in 2008 with my then newly purchased Canon EOS 450D, fitted with an old Takumar 55 mm 1.8 lens on an adapter. I was exploring the use of vintage lenses vs lenses made for use on digital cameras. I wasn't disappointed with the results; the old lenses easily matched the performance of modern lenses in several respects, one of which was the smoothness of what we call 'bokeh', out-of-focus blur. As you can see, in this rather scarcely colored photo the background blur is very smooth. Your comments are very welcome.

Vincent, it's always nice to see your old photos. A very beautiful image, the progressive fading of the background to the total lack of definition, honors your old lens. It would be nice to have a comparison of the same image with a different lens , ciao Giangiorgio

Hi Richard,

thanks for your friendly comments! The DoF is pretty smooth here and the subject (an old basket) shows that well. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Giangiorgio,

thank you for these great comments! I like your idea of the comparison between an old and a new lens and will either search for it in my collection or make a new series of photos. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, first and foremost, I apologize wholeheartedly for appearing to ignore you. I'm away from my home and using a laptop instead of my computer. I'd say hands down that your study is eminently successful. Interestingly, it seems that some of the rope in the BG is almost as sharp as that in the FG. Moreover, there's a surprise close to the center - what appears to be a baby bird. Congratulations for continuing to dazzle me with your abstract work. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

honestly, I didn't think you were ignoring me at all! I'm glad you like my DoF study, and I particularly like the use of your great imagination in your comment: 'there's a surprise close to the center- what appears to be a baby bird'. That is priceless! Thank you for this wonderful comment! Kind regards, Vincent
