The quiet summer evening atmosphere in Dieulefit, a small city in the Drôme department of southern France, was marvelous. There was nothing special going on; little illustrates this better than the the detail I have named this photo after. There is a lttle restaurant in this street that is one of my personal favorites, called 'la barigoule', serving mainly local dishes, without Michelin stars but with very pleasing service and food of excellent quality.

Excellent composition with the street on the right side curving to the left as it presents the city to the traveler, Vincent. A very natural flow that eases your eyes into the various buildings on the street. The colors are great with the light being a perfect mixture of light and dark. The street area is very clean with normal activities going on. A heavenly slice of life captured by a Master Technician. Best regards, Paul.

A charming picture, Vincent! This frame is filled with air, light and shadows, heat, colors ... Beautiful composition and details! I suppose in the menu of the restaurant you mentioned there is a special dish "Artichauts à la barigoule". Bravo! Sincerely, Tatiana

Hi Paul,

your comment is incredibly flattering and more than I deserve for this photo that I like myself too, but isn't quite 'the heavenly slice of life captured by a Master Technician'. That's too much praise, Paul. If you continue like this, someday I'll start believing it :). Thank you very much for your comment! Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Tatiana,

there likely is such a dish on their menu, as their cuisine is mostly southern French. À la barigoule is most probably their specialty preparation. Thank you for you friendly comment! Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Vincent, it's like you say in the description, this photo gives a sense of calm and relaxation, for which you succeeded.

These small towns are also my favorites for this.

Regarding the photo, I find the horizon a little unbalanced to the right, but I like the framing.

Good photos!

Best regards, Max

Hi Max,

thanks for your friendly comment! I don't understand exactly what you mean by the horizon being unbalanced to the right, but I presume that you find the composition's emphasis to be too heavy on the right side of the image. I'm glad you like the photo. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Patrick,

thank you for your friendly comment! It is a place where you feel at ease, where life seems to have the pace it was meant to have, very peaceful and welcoming. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, I feel like this image, like the others, is part of a travelogue. Actually, you should consider publishing a book that couples your always informative narratives with your magnificent images. - - - Initially, what struck me about this one are two things. First, the dappled light seems to involve many tonal values and provides intriguing contrasts. Secondly, the vertically short wall which runs from the bottom left corner steers a viewer's attention to the rest of the city. Also, I love how the walkway which curves to the left in the middle right seems to disappear past the parked cars. Your obvious professionalism and artistry have produced a technically flawless and highly aesthetically pleasing image, for which I am grateful. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

thank you for your very amicable comment! Publishing a book...? That's very flattering, but it wouldn't be a best-seller. I like the way you always analyze a picture and come up with a relevant conclusion.

But no one of my dear PN 'colleagues' has mentioned the title or my reference to it in my description, which surprises me. It is the fact that nothing special is going on and everything is as okay as can be expected, illustrated by the mother removing a pebble from her daughter's shoe, which is like a photo in this photo, next to the one way street sign. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, I owe you two apologies. First and foremost, whether due to carelessness, senility, or a myriad of other explanations, I simply did not see the mother helping her child with putting on a shoe. Secondly, I drafted a similar set of comments yesterday and thought I had successfully posted them to the image. Obviously that didn't happen. Hopefully you will accept the apologies. Even if you don't, I still will follow your work and post critiques. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

there's absolutely no need to apologize for anything! I just hoped someone would see the mother and daughter and said so in my response to your very nice comments. The scene came as an extra when I was shooting the photo and I liked it very much because I couldn't have thought of something that would illustrate near-perfect better than that. I value your opinion and keen eye and hope to keep on receiving your comments, which are very helpful to me. Kind regards, Vincent
