Beware of the dog

This lovely dog was trying to get some attention rather than guarding its home. Shot handheld with an Olympus Zuiko 14-42 mm 3.5-5.6 lens.

A very nice dog that wasn't doing at all what its owners were hoping it would do, guarding the home in Sainte-Enimie (Southern France) with its rusty fence. I didn't have bad intentions, but if I would have had them, I'm sure this lovely dog would have welcomed me into the premises, wagging its tail. Your comments are very welcome.

Hi Franz,

thanks for your funny comment! I think this one liked me, but normally I feel more of a connection with cats. Kind regards, Vincent

Cute shot, Vincent! Accurately captured dog mood in the pose of waiting for the owner. Bravo! Sincerely, Tatiana

Photographs often reflect our own take on the world rather than any objective reality. Is this lonely dog melancholy as I think or just eyeing something out of the camera's view. For that matter, is he lonely at all? Good pictures (or at least the ones that speak to me) are always like that, they reach beneath the surface and involve you emotionally in some way.

Hi Jack,

thank you for yet another thoughtful comment! I couldn't agree more, in photography it's about the emotional involvement rather than the actual presence of characteristics or signals. The melancholia of this dog is a good example. Kind regards, Vincent

Or in this particular case: Beware of fence and gate! ;-)

Hi Philip, Thank you for your funny comment! I could live with this concept of safety however. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, congratulations on a charming image. I too sensed that the dog exhibited sadness. Fortunately, the image requires the viewer to interpret the dog's expression and position. Perhaps the dog's feelings are based on the wrought iron gate and its possibly resembling prison bars, or perhaps as several remarks have noted its longing for company. On the other hand, maybe the pooch isn't sad at all. Possibly it simply is curious about the world outside the gate. A great find, which you handled expertly and sensitively. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

thank you for your insightful and friendly comments! We all project feelings on animals that we interact with. Sometimes we're right, sometimes we overdo it. In this case, I'm pretty sure that this dog wanted our attention. Kind regards, Vincent

The eyes are so beautiful and in perfect focus, Vincent. Looks like the dog could use a new collar. Steadfast and on guard, watching for any intruders. The composition puts the dogs head in the center of attention where it belongs. Excellent colors, light and presentation. Perfect timing to catch this dog in this position on the fence. The dog looks a little camera shy. A well executed and presented image. Best regards, Paul.

Hi Paul,

thank you for commenting so nicely on this simple dog photo! This dog stood out for being lovely with its somewhat sad eyes and hanging ears. I edited the composition to make sure the dog's face would be around the center of the image. It was clear that this dog was yearning for attention, that's why I had to put him/her in the center. Kind regards, Vincent
