poppygan 0 Posted November 21, 2003 This photo was made early in the morning while the fog was still hanging over the lake. The Great Blue Heron stands his silent vigile. Canon D60. Canon EF 300mm 4,0 L IS lens. ISO 400. Link to comment
afterthoughts 0 Posted November 21, 2003 Well done. The composition is perfect. The bird is looking into the photograph, the color, the mist...it's wonderful. Good work. Link to comment
clives 0 Posted November 21, 2003 I would have cropped it tighter--removed some of the right side. Nice image. Link to comment
jemini_joseph 0 Posted November 21, 2003 It's amazing you got the subject so isolated. Congrats Link to comment
baldurbirgis 0 Posted November 22, 2003 Beautiful image and the composition works for me. Link to comment
nicola_barbini 0 Posted November 22, 2003 Cropping a little from the right and the bottom would bring the bird into a 1/3,1/3 position... but I think it works perfecly fine where it is! Link to comment
robert goldstein 0 Posted November 22, 2003 It's gorgeous, but I would prefer the bird more to the right. Link to comment
smalinowski 0 Posted November 23, 2003 Great capture! Conveys a quiet early morning mood. I agree with the above comments about the rule of thirds. Overall, very artistic. Link to comment
stp 6 Posted November 23, 2003 Wonderful image -- simple composition, great mood. I agree with the above comments about cropping, and you might want to try a bit off the bottom as well, perhaps up to/through those several bright spots left of center. Link to comment
conrad_seto 0 Posted November 23, 2003 A.s y.e.t., I have to see another b.e.t.t.e.r. gorgeous heron captured with such an early morning spirit. Yours is superb work, Mr. Houghton! Link to comment
jacoangeli 0 Posted November 23, 2003 I like the composition of the picture. There is a feeling of quiet ...... I like the transparency of the water too. Link to comment
larry_etkin 0 Posted November 24, 2003 This is a wonderful image combining great light and visual elements. I like the original crop...gives the feeling of depth and mysticism. Link to comment
walterh 0 Posted November 24, 2003 excellent! technical question: whats your insect repellent? :-P Link to comment
gideon_killion 0 Posted November 24, 2003 I disagree with the suggestions for cropping in order to bring the bird more into alignment with the rule of thirds. You lose too much of the dark bank on the right. Although I lack the technical vocabulary to explain why, the image has more power as-is. IMHO. Link to comment
lgoodwin 0 Posted November 24, 2003 I wouldn't crop it either. I think that the right and left sides help give a sense of the isolation of the heron in the landscape. There is too much slavish devotion to the "rule of thirds". IMHO, that's a rule that is made to be broken as often as possible. Link to comment
root 0 Posted November 25, 2003 Maybe the better question is, could this image have been better framed to begin with. If you want to emphasize space, don't use the bird to cut the space in half, but instead provide more of it to the left. Link to comment
zeynep_yosun_akverdi 0 Posted January 12, 2004 beautiful picture, i liked the original one, too. a dreamy scene... congratulations. Link to comment
june_ranson 0 Posted July 16, 2004 I like both the cropped and original versions. I think the question is, what are you showing? The space, or the bird? Did you alter the color at all, or is this what you saw? Beautiful moody picture! Link to comment
jacobmiles 0 Posted July 18, 2004 This really caught my attention. It doesn't need any cropping at all, but I had the thought that cropping it on the left, making it square, would have the interesting effect of emphasizing the shape of the outcropping, because it would more explicitly contrast the two halves of the image, with the bird marking a sort of fulcrum in the center.
