Concerned Bighorn Sheep

kai_compagner

I'd like to tell you I went through this epic wilderness adventure just to catch a glimpse of these reclusive animals, but the truth is these guys were sitting on the rim in the grand canyon village. Yes, that is *inside* the village. Less than a 100 yards from the El Tovar. They were completely at ease with the people walking along the rim trail, but reacted with some alarm when somebody passed behind me walking their dog (or, as they may have perceived it, a wolf on a leash). They bolted seconds after this shot.Which aperture was going to give me sharpness on all sheep but nice blurrage on the background was kind of a gamble but things seem to have worked out at f8 (at 75mm).

These female bighorns (at least that's what I think they are) were

showing themselves off at the Grand Canyon village. It was nice to be

able to include their favorite habitat in the background.

A nice bright, crystal clear photograph. The arrangement of the three is ideal. Two stood, one seated. A group of two and one on its own. One stood facing out left the other facing out right. None overlap, interfering with anothers outline. All face the camera. They are displayed inches from what the background suggests is a vertical drop of some distance and with the inclusion of the rocky shelf and background one is provided with a flavour of the terrain these animals inhabit and the dexterity of their nimble limbs. All these things are informative educationally as well as pictorially. Good job.

Kai, this is great one. Last time I went to Grand Canyon and I met one male bighorn along a short trail. I just got amazed and didn't think about taking the pix. 5 second later, he's gone.

The composition is great, I agree. Different gestures just make it more interesting. I am kind of person who love the detail and this one does fantastic job. The setting gives me the sense that there would be no way to run.

Weakness? might be the light condition of the background? It is good but not great. Thinking about the chance to meet those sheep are very rare, I might be too picky. :)

Overall, yet not perfect, this is great catch that impress me and makes me wondering. Also brings me back to the good memory in the past which my life is total different ....

Sorry about my poor English and thanks for sharing.

Thanks Phil and Kurt. It seems that like mountain goats these animals like to hang out on rock promotions next to big drops. Must be a safety from predators thing. While they seem cornered they bounded down a ridiculously steep slope to the right with complete confidence.

I must confess that this shot makes me a little nervous. My fear of heights has elevated significantly as I've gotten older. But all that aside, this is a wonderful picture!

Well gosh - you COULD have lied and told us you went on a great wilderness adventure to get this shot!! :-) Great capture anyway!!

I like how you told us the true story! That's fantastic. The composition is nice, and the pastel colors are a nice contrast from the usual oversaturated tones you see around here.
