This is an original photo! Aestetically I can see that the color balance isn't exact: everything seems greenish, about the composition I'm not sure... You certainly need some space on the right but that's nearly half the photo, after that, cropping out part of the legs would be a pity but may give more "strength" to the scene.

Yes, this is an original pic, and obtained under some pressure, as those Cop's fingers are pretty close to the trigger! I was lying on a stopbank and didn't want to be mistaken for the quarry while aiming something at them. Compose, shoot a few frames, and run in my case.

 

It is a poor quality exposure, noisy, and the white balance is not quite right, as you say. It's often that way in breaking News/Journalism photography.

 

This composition was chosen to demonstrate the living conditions of the young couple, and give the cops some unknown territory to venture forth into. I did have to wait for them to advance to a suitable position that included the mother and child.

 

It certainly isn't a pretty pic, more a social comment about connections between youth, poverty, crime and domestic abuse. Would this same scenario be played out in a nice middle class suburb where a successful businessman clocked his wife one and she called the police?

This has got to be one of my favorite pictures on Photo.net. I love the green and I love the grain, and even the sloppy framing succeeds in giving this picture a sense of urgency. Yes, it is not conventionally perfect, but it is as highly stylized as a feature film. It reminds me of "Black Hawk Down" BECAUSE of its unnatural colors. I assume that this was a somewhat lucky shot, but if you could manage to design a whole picture story after this photo, i.e. same style of framing, color balance, and grain, that story could easily be published in TIME Magazine or NEWSWEEK. All of a sudden a mistake would be seen as a superior stylistic choice. that is my opinion.

It was not a lucky shot, but one select of a few taken, at a high ISO setting to enable a high enough shutter speed to get a relatively sharp hand held pic with a 1.4 converter added to a 200mm lens (equals a 440mm telephoto on the now obsolete DCS 520 Digital SLR) and not colour corrected sufficiently.

Nice documentary picture. The mother and child make the picture great. The facial expression on the soldiers is intense and not relaxed. The house is a mess (but that is probably another story) - Great picture.

It boggles my mind how anyone can rate this photo below at least 5/5. Do you expect it to be pretty? Nicely balanced and proportional? Folks, if this is for real and not some training op, these people are holding rifles. I wonder how the kiss-asses on photo.net would rate a war picture from Iraq, as opposed to the boring sugarcoated PS still life bullshit that is offered here so excessively. Great capture.
