Tony Long 28 Posted March 23, 2018 Thanks Laurent Didn't have to go far. These spikes sometimes form in our kayaks at the bottom of the garden. So on the rare frosty mornings here, I always check. This was a small one, but perfectly formed. Tony Link to comment
michaellinder 16,613 Posted March 23, 2018 The chance formation of this ice creature based on exactly the right ambient conditions (or, if you prefer, when all the cosmic tumblers click together) was not only an act of good fortune on your part, Tony. We all benefit indirectly because of this very striking image. I'm particularly impressed by the highlights on the bird's body; they are an indispensable component of its plumage. - - My best always, michael Link to comment
Tony Long 28 Posted March 23, 2018 Thanks Michael. One-eyed ice ducks are, I guess, rare so a privilege to capture and share. Regards Tony Link to comment
andrzejp 9 Posted March 23, 2018 Pure perfection. Strong composition, wonderful color and of course the ice pinguin. Link to comment

Tony Long 28 Posted March 23, 2018 Andrew, thanks and glad you enjoy it. Also shot a stack at f2.8 so look out for another version. Regards Tony Link to comment
Tony Long 28 Posted March 24, 2018 Thanks G&V. Do you ever find these forms in your neck of the woods. Possibly too cold. They form by capillary action so need conditions to facilitate that. I have moved ( or at least I think I have!) My ice folder to top gallery where there is a larger spike on view. Regards Tony Link to comment
tai 3 Posted March 24, 2018 A delightful image, Tony! In my opinion, this excellent photo should be moved to the category of Fine Arts. Bravo! Sincerely, Tatiana Link to comment
Tony Long 28 Posted March 24, 2018 Thanks TatianaGood point. I have a monochrome version to post so will put that in fine art.YoursTony Link to comment
gregverena 352 Posted March 24, 2018 Tony- no, we haven't seen anything like this. Only thing that might be formed similarly would be clumps of ice towers forming from the ground, but they are never clear and smooth like these, Link to comment
