sjmurray 33,983 Posted December 10, 2016 I get what you are saying, Fred, and I agree. Digging into my own reaction a little deeper I discovered that the image as a whole, to me, feels contrived, like the photographer created the image to feel symbolic on purpose. I can't get an emotional connection when it feels like it was done on purpose. Link to comment
AJHingel 127 Posted December 10, 2016 It seems that my comment above ended up fairly broken - send from my Ipad in a moving international fast-train ! Here it is in a somewhat more readable version: The broken fork is for me in line with the symbolic language of the image ,together with the falling fence and the cloth left hanging. I'm convinced, that the man is off too, limping. Link to comment
aplumpton 16 Posted December 10, 2016 Perhaps more simplicity in the image? The multiple symbols already mentioned by myself and others don't help in that regard. It is not necessary that a picture be clear at first sight (the pleasure is in thinking about it and effectively discovering it), not does it have to mean the same thing to each person, but I believe that overdoing symbols often reduces or confuses whatever impact it has. Some of the best images I have had the pleasure to view are very simple, almost if not minimalist. The Japanese refer to mysterious images as Yugen, which may apply to this one. On the other hand, the Oriental ethic is often associated with minimal subject matter, sort of a "no need to overdo it". Link to comment
jacek_raczy_ski 1 Posted December 11, 2016 Commenting on this image reminds wealthy tourists commenting wonderful performances savage tribes. After the departure of tourists natives speak smartphones if they earned that day. So it is with this picture, everything is set only artificial fog is true. Searching for meaning in this photo set watching artifacts can lead us to the conclusion that Poseidon arrived on a motorcycle on the old farm. The artist is of course entitled to his vision but he did it very convincingly. The upside of this image is the atmosphere of mystery but it is not enough to recognize this image as successful. GerrySiegel 868 Posted December 12, 2016 Every image worth commenting on is quote successful in my humble view. None,or only a few are perfect, remarkable, exciting to the palate, worthy- in all respects. Emotional connection, ah there is a phrase to reflect on, means that it is worth a second glance in the flood of images we get on line, -flashing story illustrations in papers. Worthy of our pecking on the keyboard to be blunt... I do not even have to admire (l.e. find pros in it to find it just " Interesting." Although to be truthful, " interesting'' sometimes means just less than 'interesting." ( How does this sweater go with my outfit? Uh, it is interesting..) This POTW is at least interesting with capital I. Link to comment

AJHingel 127 Posted January 31, 2021 Love it ! The barbed wire, the falling fence poles, the left-behind overall (?) and the farmhand walking into the nothingness. Hardness making a living out of farmwork. Link to comment
